This is from the NY Times. Carnegie Hall was built with living studios upstairs. The last 2 tenants have finally been pushed out, including a 98 year old photographer. I had the chance to spend a day in her apartment about 20 years ago. She lent it to the NY Swing Dance Society for us to work on some performances. The walls were covered with her work, which included an amazing number of portraits of famous Americans that everyone would instantly recognize, all by her. It was a very cool experience. Carnegie Hall is an amazing place, and I guess this is progress, and the people involved all were moved into very nice new homes. But still.
