Ladies in the trenches

One Too Many
Having a dispute with my nephew about trench coats..I showed him one on the bay with the gun flap on the left, and because the lister says it is 'women's size 14' he thinks it's a girl's coat...I assumed that the women's version by big makers has no gun flap so it's wrongly described, and as a true trench buttons both ways, it can be worn by either gender...any thoughts here?

Help for you?

Typically, if there are gunflaps, they will be on the left side or on both for women. This is because women's trenches are meant to be buttoned right over left as per custom. Check out Burberry...

But yes, a true trench can be buttoned either way... but that defeats the purpose of the gun flap, which is supposed to button over the outermost flap. I'll post pics of my men's Burberrys if you desire.

Hope this helps.

A true trench coat is DB and should have "storm flaps" at both sides because a DB CAN be buttoned to either side. A well thought out SB "raincoat" should have
a storm flap at the closing side.

A ladies' trench/raincoat would possibly have other feminine details, such as waist suppression, bust tailoring and a more flared "skirt".

I don't think we have enough information about the coat in question.
