LA Quake - 7/29 11:42 5.8 magnitude

I hope all of you Loungers down there are OK and didn't lose anything in this latest shaker. Friends are IM'ing it had a lot more violent shaking than a "normal" 5.8 and lasted longer (10 seconds before it eased off). I'm watching KNBC on the net and no fires or buildings collapsing. They're saying all the landline phones in Chino Hills & East Valley having been ringing since the quake and nobody can call out, and cell phones are out in downtown LA.

Anyway - I hope you're all well and your shaken nerves recover quickly!

Having just gotten back into the building at work...(we evacuate for any incidents)....all is well down here in Huntington Beach.

Lots of shaking, stuff fell down like ceiling tiles...etc...

but thats it.

Well, let me say, from my perch here in the BEAUTIFUL San Fernando Valley, it was a ROLLER. Now, I've been out here for a while. I moved here just before the Landers/Big Bear quake and I was also here for the Northridge quake, as well as a myriad of others. As far as this one goes, it was LONG, but not that violent. The house rolled, the cats ran, I held the TV in place.

The interesting thing is I WANT this kind of quake to happen. And it's been a long time between quakes around these parts, and that was worrying me. These moderate quakes allow the stored energy to be released. The more of these, the better. Sure, it rattles the nerves, but it helps to keep us a little farther from The Big One, which is inevitable.

Did not feel it here on the Central Coast of California (think Pismo Beach), but my mom is 5 miles from the epicenter and called extremely shaken up. They lost a few knickknacks but are fine otherwise. I am keeping track of the aftershocks here.

Hope all the other SoCal Loungers are safe and sound!

Inky - I'm glad your mom is okay.

We're okay here in Long Beach, too. No damage or anything, but my chandelier was swinging so hard I thought it was going to fall. We felt the forshock first. As it was ending, I was thinking "hmm, was that a small earthquake?" Then the motion started again and Boom! We were hit with a big jolt that felt like something hit the house and then more shaking (we had more shake then roll). Our dog took a flying leap into my sons arms. I was in another room from my kids so I yelled for them to head for the doorways. We felt several of the aftershocks (which felt like standing on our sailboat) and could see the house across the street moving back and forth during those.

It was a wild ride, but I'm happy that it sounds like there were no injuries or damage reported.

These moderate quakes allow the stored energy to be released. The more of these, the better. Sure, it rattles the nerves, but it helps to keep us a little farther from The Big One, which is inevitable.

They've said for several years, it really doesn't work that way. It's just little areas starting to break free or adjust. Overall, they don't really release that much energy nor delay the Big One - it's sort of a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things. Like Mt. St. Helens. All those little shakes and puffs of steam were releasing pressure and minimizing what was going to happen in the future, and then bla-boom - a cubic mile of dirt and rock is airborne.

But glad to hear reports are of just minor damage and no deaths or injuries.

Over here in the Fullerton area it was pretty good, just had an after shock happen a little bit ago. Everything stayed on the shelves which was wonderful but it was my dogs first earthquake and he was dealthy frightened with me in a doorway. Hope all the Southern California Loungers are safe and all their possesions stayed put!

I work on the second floor in downtown l.a. At first i thought it was a semi passing by,then it got stronger and stronger. My son came with me to work today and he was sitting on a couch with his laptop. He said at first he thought it was an employee messing with him and shaking the couch.
A few small books fell off the shelf near my desk,but everybodys fine.

We had a big boom - it felt like the day one of the elevators fell down the shaft and hit bottom (no one in it thank God!) - but then kept rolling and rolling. Hope all is well at home. Our poor kitty is all alone

I was at work in the Special Collection's reading room, where it's all nice and quiet and everyone's focused. The second it started happening everyone just looked up and at each other with wide eyes. None of us knew what to do!

I'm just glad I wasn't in the stacks and that none of our books got messed up. And now that I think of it, where I have to sit when working the reading room is definitely not the place to be. There's a giant 6 foot wide framed map on the wall right behind me. If that fell down I would not be happy!

South Bay was shakin' for what seemed like 25-30 seconds, but it was pretty mellow, almost relaxing after the first big rattle. Wanted to drop another quarter in to keep it going. A great one for newcomers--not especially dangerous, and there was lots of time to soak it up for those details to share with the folks back home. I've taken calls from NY and Maryland already. "Are you okay?" Oh, fine, fine.

(LA earthquakes are always rather well received by our Eastern relations. Restores their faith in the justice of the universe, that we should suffer...well, something!...for all our days of carefree, corrupting sunshine).

My first earthquake - exactly one year to the day that I moved here - and we spent it shaking and a-shimmying on the 17th floor in downtown San Diego as the building swayed.

As someone who has never been in an earthquake, what does a "rolling" quake entail?
