Well, since I discovered it thru this forum, I thought I'd take a jaunt down to the south side and check out Optimo's shop. What a beautiful shop, nicely laid out.

I have identified the hat I need to save up for, fer sure.

I was a bit surprised that they didn't have any brushes or ancillary hat supplies, though. Might be something they'd want to add to the wares, I think.

I used to live close to the area that shop is in during the 1980s. Going back there made me recall days of yore. It's about an hour away for me now as I live up north of there now.

Anyway, great shop. I'll be going back, for sure.

They have too many great hats...

OK, maybe I haven't decided 100%. I like their "Dillinger," their "Mitchum," and their fedora with the box bow. But which ever one I get I have for sure settled on their cream color (I think they call it Palomino).

Having looked at the website, should I be right in assuming they don't ship their hats anywhere?

No, they'll ship. Just give 'em a call or shoot them an email. Tiffany at Optimo promptly responded to my email, and even though I didn't end up ordering, they're very professional.

Mobile Vulgus, did you get to meet with Graham? I have only spoken with him on the phone. Seems nice enough. Tiffany is a sweetheart!

My hat has a build date of Sept 25. Pretty exciting.

Great, and thanks for the heads up! I'll have to e-mail them for a quote on some of their felt fedoras.

Live in the area near Optimo, and have my eye on a homburg.
Love the Beverly hood. :)

Not only do they ship, I have sent hats there for rennovation, and they do great work. Graham will call you to discuss & confirm the details before they begin work (at least, he used to do that, maybe he delegates that now), very professional, very timely in completing and returning your hat.

I used to think they were the best on the planet, but that was before I had heard of several other hatters with fine reputations, and having never visited those other shops or done any business with them, not really fair to draw a conclusion about 'best' - but certainly have no complaints about Graham's shop.

I think their underwelt (lightweight felt) is just super, about as close to a modern cav edge as I can imagine, you have to examine the brim to 'discover' that it is underwelted, a really clean look, apparently the underwelt is pressed really flat so that it is not conspicuous.

If you look through their client 'book' of photos on the glass counter there, impressive how many movie stars and other famous people have worn (or wear) hats from that shop. Gus at Batsakes (Cincinnati) has been around a lot longer, and his client list is also impressive, but Graham has gotten a lot of the recent movie wardrobe type work (untouchables, road to perdition, public enemies, I think).
