Here are a few shots of the Penny's Marathon fedora I picked up. It arrived yesterday. It is in great condition and the hat liner and sweat band are fine. I was concerned about the sweat band from the picture I posted of it but it must have been the camera angle. It is a perfect fit. The price tag of $8.95 is still attached. The hat looks new. Not sure of its real age. Any ideas?

:eusa_clap :eusa_clap very nice, indeed. Plastic liner top says 50s to me.

very much like a whippet, eh?

I believe you are correct BK, my search of news print ads resulted in this
an ad in Oct 1953 had the Marathons listed in price from $4.98 - $7.90
then in Oct 1960 the price for Marathons was $9.90

:eusa_clap Great looking hat by the way!:eusa_clap

Nice lid! I've only ever seen OR-style Marathons before. Interesting to see a Whippet-esque version.

Cheers,

This is a beauty.

This hat is likely from the mid 1950's. It is in mint condition, if there are no moth bites. The plastic liner, sweatband, bead, and felt look to be pristine.

This is what you want to see when the UPS man drops off the package from Ebay..and you open the box, 'voila".

I have been very lucky to have about 2/3's of my 65+ hats arrive in this condition, or better. I even have one "NOS" (new, old stock) from Art, when he had his vintage clothing store.

Nice hat, great find, and you won't find one as good or better!

Great score MKL

I am the proud owner of the exact same hat, but in tan with a darker brown ribbon. It's a 7.

Same wind trolley, lining (sewn-in) and sweatband. Mine's got a diamond shaped bash and a price tag that reads "$7.90" maybe grey was more expensive?

Thanks for all the kind comments. I am enjoying the hat. It does look like style of a Stetson as someone mentioned. Here is a pic of a Stetson I have:

Now here is the Marathan:

Pretty close.

It does have the Whippet look except it has a wider ribbon - at least on the Whippet I own.

Thanks again for the comments.
