THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE DB SUIT -

Doesn't it make you sick sometimes, when you are outbid by a pittance of an amount [huh] In my case, this beauty of a 40's 3 piece DB, navy wool suit, I was outbid last minute by $5, and it was made for me!!

In fact, I have just had an invite to my nephew's wedding next month, and this is how I justified splashing out on this baby. All the measurements were ideal.

As Capt. Blackadder quipped, while up to his oxters in the mud of Flander's Fields, "It rhymes with 'clucking bell!" YES, you got-it, I am not a happy teddy, but...all's fair in love, war and auctions!!

Guess I'll have to wait another 100-years for this opportunity again [huh]

Man, that sucks. I've been there too often now for it to hurt me any more; i've become rather sanguine about auction outcomes.

But yes, it sucks to high heaven when you lose out by a paltry amount. But believe me, you would have to have bid much higher to win it (because you lost by the bid increment). It's much worse when you know that if you'd bid just 35 or 40 cents more you would've won.

Ouch!....That was a nice looking suit, I remember Mosk's shop ( the name on the label) in downtown Houston, when I was a kid, I believe they were in business for quite a longtime. Back when people went to downtown Houston to shop.

If it makes you feel better, their highest bid could have been much higher than the five bucks; it only goes up incrementally above the next highest bid. So even if you had bid much higher, their highest bid may have been hundreds more.

Of course you guys are right...

In incrementals, the price of that baby could have just kept rocketing. But then again, the person who eventually got it, got it at a decent price for what it was!!

My luck will win over at some point!

Oh, the agony of defeat!

That really was a sharp suit (the shade of blue was gorgeous) but, as always, you have the right attitude; your day will come.

Exactly. I've found that it's best to assume that it was thousands more than I was willing to spend. ;)

Still, as I've been reading through some of the GREAT Ebay steals some of you gents have been getting, I guess I've probably been saved a lot of money (it helps to look at it like that[huh] ).

My day will come, just have to be patient ;) .

Paddy,

Nice suit, sorry you missed it. Trust me, it's not the equal of the suit in the photograph of Mr. Flynn. Keep looking, they are out there and eBay is not the only place.

You recall the vintage clothing store in Digbeth that I refered you to when we were in Birmingham? I just bought a German suit, very like the one above in a similar pinstripe but brown and cream for 20GBP.

The suit in the photograph of Mr. Flynn has shoulders like the 'Marc Chevalier' suit. I like the small waist, big shoulder look, but you don't half attract some stupid comments when you wear it.

Thanks Alan.

I'm peaved, but it was 'expensive.' I really should have had a chance to look around the shop you mention, but sadly the time wouldn't have allowed it anyway. Sounds like there are some cracking bargains. My head must be in the sand my friend, as I'm just not switching onto these good bargains in 30s/40s suits that I like. Actually the hour glass figure cut and the classic high waisted straight legged pants just 'dooooooo it' for me!! Love BIG peaked lapels too in DB with single button waistcoat, or....single button jacket with peaked lapel and DB waistcoat....YES!!

Off to cry over my cappuccino!!! in a rather abnormally 'sunny' Northumberland!

Paddy,

The secret to cheap suitery is to avoid auctions and be prepared to accept the less-than-genuine. As has been pointed out before, there were tailors (Germany is a prime example) who were making suits that have the features of the 1940s well into the 1970s and beyond. If you want genuine 1940s and you are competing in an auction, expect to pay high prices. If you just want 'the look', expect to pay cheap prices.

Oh, how disappointing! What is it with these bidders, don't they realize these suits were meant for you? As you say, your day will come eventually.
