I'm joining the armed forces. I'm excited and everything is going very well. But that also means no more red lipstick, red nail polish or pretty flowing 40's and 50's inspired hair. I'll have to wear my hair up and I am trying to find pictures of pretty vintage inspired up-dos. I found this pictures which I really like but I have NO idea how to do it.

Are there any fun and cute vintage UP do's out there? Any ideas?

Congratulations!

I've seen a lot of WM's (women marines) out here that have long hair, and it depends on what kind of cover you have to wear. I've seen french twists (you can always make it a nice one) or the continuous roll, like how Veronica Lake demonstrated to wear it at work, because the ladies hair was getting caught in the machinery.

I have a couple pics I can scan for you.. It will take me a minute, but I'll be as fast as I can. It has to be off the nape of the neck, or just not touching the collar?

ok, my scanner is not working, but here is what I found on the net.. that was similar to what is in my book, and close to what I was trying to describe.

You could do the top in a victory roll setting, but continously roll the bottom..

The lady on the left. I hope you can see it ok.

Here is the back on another bottom roll:

And the front of it, which probably won't go for military. But you can victory roll this part.

The roll idea is a good one and easily adaptable to several different styles. Most of the Female Marines that I know tend to wear their hair in the chignon buns. They use either a sock or one of those foam chignon bun donuts to add stability and i'm not sure what the right word is...volume? I'll see if I can find some of the pictures that I have that would still be stylish but would meet grooming standards.

Congrats!

If you can find the book 1940's Hair by Daniela Turudich (it's out of print and ridiculously priced on Ebay -- I found it through my university's interlibrary loan for free!), they have a whole section on military hairstyles from the 40's.

If you can't find the book through ILL, you could probably ask around on the livejournal vintage hair community (http://livejournal.com/vintagehair) to see if someone could scan some pages for you.

ok, I got my scanner working..(whew!)

This is from my Vintage Hairstyles book.

And this was another image I found in the book:

The military hairstyles they describe in the book are for much shorter hair than you have. I've only seen chignons, buns (are they the same?) and the occasional french twist. Like I said, you could fancy it up depending what type of cover you wear. (how it sits on your head). hope this helps! or gives you ideas anyway!;)

Congratulations and Good Luck

Better make sure you are allowed to wear these styles, of course. When I went to hubby's graduation from U. S. Army basic training 2 years ago and on subsequent visits to him during AIT all the females had a lot of gel or other controlling product in their hair and scraped it back into an extremely tight knot. Unspeakably unbecoming and unattractive, which is probably one of the reasons, the main certainly being to keep your line of sight clear. I think only one female had a short haircut which looked much better and was incredibly easy to deal with. Your hair is so beautiful I can see why you don't want to cut it but I thought I'd mention the hassles and look-spoilers. On the bright side, the PXs had all kinds of great hair clips and such to buy!

I have the same scans as Red does. I know with the US regs it has to be neat and above the collar. But beyond that (and beyond basic / boot) I don't think they're too restrictive. At least in the US based on what I see with the Marines I work with.

Congratulations MarieAnne and thank you for your service! :eusa_clap

My brother was in the Air Guard and from talking with girls there I think the thing was that no loose hair could be hanging down, like no flyaways.

If the styles are OK to wear, I hope all the hairpins are! And the sock idea works very well, tho I'm not sure how to do it! I asked a girl while down there but didn't "get" it.

I highly suggest the bullroped sides. Not rolled but a very feminine, not so slicked back look. And it's how Dorothy wore her hair in Wizard of Oz, so authentic.
Here I am with bullroping down the sides and then a bun with the tails.

Here's one wear I parted it all the way down, did each side, then turned the rope into braids at the eards and pinned the braids up.

Other veiws of that here,

When I bullrope, I start at front and divide a chunk of hair into two sections. Take bottom section and cross over top. Add slice of hair into the "new" bottom strand and cross over top strand, repeating down the side of the head. Just keep adding hair to the bottom strand and twist.
Here is a pic of how it would look if you were to add additional hair to each section before crossing,

You might want one of these, you could do the 40's roll with it too I would think,

the hard part will be getting these styles to stay while doing drill and such. And you've got, what 20 seconds to do your hair every day? LOL! I think most girls did their's while wet.
Best wishes,
Nikki

When I was in basic training 20 years ago, my fellow basic trainees with long hair did a French braid.

Don't forget that your hat has to fit over your 'do.

they have foam forms to make those rolls. VERY easy to use. just a few bobby pins and you're done.
I think this is the foam form leaette refers to. Just thought some of you might like a direct link. Have any of you used this and if so how difficult is it to use? I have something similar but it's extremely difficult to get all the hair in mine, which would probably be very difficult for layered hair.
