No don't get me wrong treeman, JL is the probably only place to get exact weight I want and that's why I ordered 2 jackets from them, there is no question about it.
In other place like LW, you will only see "heaviest hh" on the receipt of your order even though you requested 4oz plus horsehide.

I’ve stopped doing that entirely but you are right. And I suspect the availability across a wide range of makers for this extra dreadnought is scarce. The fact that Stu revised his site (first time since ‘95?) tells me he doesn’t have a pipeline for it.

Hh, I don't think that jacket's gonna make you happy. I believe you've surpassed jackets in that particular way and need to explore and expand your style more. You need something else now and only you know what that is. I could be wrong but... All of this sounds all to familiar.
I think you might be right about this Monitor but I also think this is a journey that Hh must see through to the end.

Agreed, that's why I don't want Hh to stray from the path he's destined to follow, which is all about pursuing the heaviest leather jacket ever made. Switching from 6oz to 5oz doesn't make sense. Hh needs a 15lbs jacket and there's no other alternative otherwise this project will be doomed.

oh, I have said that in previous post, if I order 6 oz and turns out 5 oz, that will makes me unhappy. Having said that, I am seriously considering to change the thickness from 6 oz to 5 oz.
I think what you want is thickness and how thick leather creased differently than thin leather, using weight parameter to measure thickness is a weird way we stuck with in both leather and denim, man you don't need the weight, what you need is thickness, so if there is 5oz leather that is somehow in the same thickness with the 6oz because different tanning method then I don't see why not, making the total jacket heavy is easy, give it a heavy lining then it gets heavy, add heavy buckles, etc. but I guess what you truly seek is thickness.

I dig that someone wants thick leather because I like heavy denim. 22-oz denim is fine for me, except in hottest of weather. But thick leather gets heavy, fast. 4 lbs for a jacket is max weight for me (that is for a fall/winter jacket), and I most enjoy my super-light, 3-lb Score horsehide jacket. Different strokes and all. But I am curious how the 6-ouncer comes out.

Do you mean density (weight per volume)? According to the following research paper, you should choose Formaldehyde-tanned buckskin if a high g/cm2 ratio is what you're after :)

https://nvlpubs.nist.gov/nistpubs/jres/31/jresv31n3p169_A1b.pdf

The research paper is from 1943 and they used a mercury displacement method to determine the density. My advice would be not to try that at home :p

frontier explorer has to be anointed as martyr even before their journey started. :D

i think the edge of the cuff is a good way to showcase the thickness of the leather, if it is done like on vanson's cuff, un skived just folded, it will look THICK.

Folded, Hammered and sewn to the liner. I love that too but wonder if the old 6oz’r would shred the liner!

Exploring linings in a little more detail.
Anything short of Kevlar ballistic cloth will be appalling to the manliness of this jacket.
Plus, they come in nice colors and weaves....even some tweedish.

So you had ordered "Heaviest HH", you received 4.5oz HH which has always been what Stu described as his heaviest hide, but you still find a way to complain about it three years on...
It's like you are continuously looking for any reason to crap on LW without real justification!

no, you misunderstood me. I didn't complain that LW thickness, I only curious why he didn't list 4.5 oz horsehide on the receipt, that's it.
I also said good thing about LW, but you choose neglect it.
some people had good experience with him, and some people like me had horrible experience, and yes I don't like LW in general, the Ryder I have can not compare with JL's half belt.

Yeah, I might be in the minority but LW has always been good to work with for me - took the time to answer my (dumb) questions, never was snarky...and a really cool end product.
Only issue I’ve had with any company for that matter was Langlitz, who were kind of snobby, but hey, I have thick skin so I can take it.

Only kidding a bit. I'm with you on this project all the way. I'm enjoying seeing the process unfold daily and can't wait to see the jacket when it's done. IMO the heaver the better !!

Yes, and the bulletproof properties are important too. As if anything lighter than a .308 Winchester stood a chance of making it through that hide in the first place!
