He once sang "Give Peace A Chance" but it seems the teenage John Lennon might have been less of a pacifist.

The man, who returned his OBE because of Britain's links to the Biafran War, was possibly an air cadet.

Well, my first year in college I was in AFROTC, mainly because I thought the uniform was cool. In 1966 I joined the Marine Corps, but later came to have anti-Vietnam War feelings. Now, as years go by and more is revealed, my opinions have further evolved.
My point is that joining a junior cadet corps in youth doesn't make John Lennon, or anyone else, a hypocrite for changing their mind later, which is what I think is being implied here (but not stated).

dhermann1, I too had that interpretation (i was also in the afrotc for the same reason).
