Maybe they're going for the Treasure of the Sierra Madre crowd, and hoping to get the pre-distressed look, like the folks who pay big money for an Indy hat that looks like it's been drug through the Streets of Cairo.

I believe you are correct. The English translation provided (click on the Union Flag in the top right hand corner of the screen) includes the description "antiqued by hand". Presumably, as with anything pre-aged, from A2s to Stratocasters to denims, a significant part of the asking price here covers the labour involved in the artificial aging process. Wouldn't be my choice, but for those who do want something like that the antiquing effect in that photo at least looks realistic.

FWIW, I have just this morning taken delivery of a black Stetson Burney (something I have wanted ever since discovering the brown one a couple of years ago, and due to unavailability in the UK long believed did not exist) from this company. Very pleased with the service. No import taxes as the transaction was carried out within the EU, and including postage it worked out at the same price as my brown one cost me in the UK (with, if memory serves, free postage).

I would think that a hat that's been through what that one is supposed to look like it has been through would not have a feather in that good a shape, or any feather at all, for that matter (yes, I know one could always just remove it).

Depends n the wearer, I suppose. I'm not a one for feathers as a rule, but it would amuse me to put on in a hat as badly beaten up as that.

Did you notice ... it's a pseudo Panama?

Pseudo hat is more like it.

Oh well, the kids here in town flock into Brass Buckle to spend double on jeans with stiched up worn spots and some brown over-dye that makes it look like they've been running the oil truck on a road repair crew.

We had an old guy who ran the oil sprayer when I worked on a road crew in the early 70s and you could never tell where the oil stopped and the chewing tobacco began. Maybe they distress those jeans in the same way!

I have found that I can "distress" a good straw hat quickly enough on my own, thanks anyway.
