Last Sunday on a (for USA) foreign film channel, I caught a film from 1993 (or so). Mediterraneo is set on a tiny Greek isle during WWII. The premise is that a group of Italian soldiers are sent to the island to take and hold it. They discover that there's nothing there to take as it seems deserted. Their ship is somehow destroyed (I missed the beginning), and they sit out the war there. The local inhabitants appear, the men settle in, etc.
It won the oscar for best foreign language film. It's a light-hearted piece, but the cinematography is worth searching for a copy (not available on DVD).
The true story of the same island is a bit different. The allies deemed it important and pretty much leveled it. At the last reference I found (1997), it never recovered and is still littered with exploded and live shells, the popluation a tiny fraction of the pre-war number. Hardly a paradise.
I enjoyed this film very much. As other reviewers have noted, it's a film that sticks in your head and leaves you thinking about it for days, but you have no idea why.
