I'm after a wool tux in black, which was described as being from the late 30's! Is that possible? If not, would you think it's worth 60$?
Here are the pics:

It's either from the very late '30s, or the '40s-mid '50s. Hard to date these, as the cuts and fabrics didn't change much until the 1960s arrived. One unusual detail is the zipper fly. In the '30s, the vast majority of European suits still had button flies. Either this tuxedo is indeed from the '30s (and the zipper was added later), or it's from a later date (and the zipper is original).

In any case, it certainly has the look of a 1930s tuxedo. $60 seems a good price, especially if the tuxedo is in great condition, fits you well, and doesn't need expensive alteration.

Gosh, it looks so much like the vintage German tuxedos I've seen! I was really fooled. :eusa_doh:

American, huh? Then I am sure that it's from the 1930s. The material and cut guarantee it. American tuxedos from later decades don't look like that one.

Go for it, Henry!

That is a good looking Tux. It looks very similar in style to the Tux i bought in a thrift store two weeks ago here in my local town. The tailor's tag in the inside pocket says it was made in August 1958 for an architect Sorensen. I paid DKK 275.- for it (USD 45.-), but would gladly have paid USD 60.- for it.
I will have to get some pictures taken of it and post it.

By the way mine is made with a buttoned fly.

Just picked up a Tux and trousers dated 1938!

Found them today in a charity shop. £10 (UK)..!!! Immaculate!! and fit me to a tee. Will get some photos in the next day or so. Just have to find a chance to wear them now. Maybe at my Tango dancing!!!! Damn, 38 was such a fine year!!

Inside track info there Scot..!

Ah, so the Baron Kurtz has been dealing again has he? That's what happens when you let a Scot loose over in the US, no vintage bargains are safe!!Still, looking forward to seeing what he has to show for his efforts, as the Baron always seems to have a keen eye, a deep pocket and the luck of the Irish when it comes to digging up some fine vintage finds!!

As old Dubya once coined..."Bring It ON......!!!"

Well, now. The pockets are deep indeed .... can never find my wallet in the bottom of them. It helps that i'm always converting back to pounds. Everything seems like a bargain when you do that!

Not so much luck of the Irish as a person who's letting me cherry pick his well stocked wardrobe at fine prices.

Who says you can't find vintage in charity shops any more? Great find, Paddy!

I'll bet it was in a small town. In my experience big city charity shops are so trawled that it's pretty much impossible to find anything.

The British countryside is an untapped goldmine of vintage clothing (much of it bespoke). Every town has a charity shop or two, and they have no clue what they've got ...

Judging by the cut, the sewing details, the zipper & catch then its my opinion that its a modern factory made coat. Maybe the early 70s at the oldest.

Hmmm; the lack of brace buttons on the trousers seems to strike me as being later than 1930's.

PS: I managed to get my DJ at a charitee shop for a twenty quid. 1926 date!
An usual feature is the fact the trousers have two stripes, like tail trousers; which I found rather odd...

The fabric, the ribbon - I've seen this in contemporary clothing. The zipper is a little queer to date it into the 30's. The coat lining just looks pretty modern to me tho the trousers got a little LBJ room in them - 50s / 60s? The gorge is a little low which is more likely in a later suit. Did tuxedos develop vents at the same pace as common suits or lag a bit? Are tuxedeos even supposed to have vents?

It doesn't scream 30s/40s to me. Its very handsome nonetheless and given the relatively relaxed cut of a classic tuxedo it fits right in with the good ones no matter the vintage. Excellent find.
