Is there a limit?

Here is a question that has been rolling around my head from time to time. Is there a limit between fashion statement to over the top eccentric? Are there hats out there that should never be donned in public? Do you own these hats? Where are your limits?

Absolutely. I wouldn't wear a pith helmet in public, that's for sure...KC ;)

I have a really nice black derby that I'm waiting for the right opportunity to wear. I know that others will disagree, but in Central Illinois, it's just not something I'd be comfortable wearing to work.

Let me rephrase that.

Wearing a fedora while naked might not be kosher.

Well only if it was a Rabbi's fedora. But..gotta say...my wife...naked in one of my fedoras...well...that REALLY works. In fact Tom Jones sang a song refering to that subject. "you can leave your hat on"

lol

A very UNOFFICIAL, Golden Era version of the song:

Baby take off your swing coat...(real slow)
Baby take off your wedge shoes...(here I'll take your wedge shoes)
Baby take off your rayon print dress
Yes yes yes
You can leave your fedora on
You can leave your fedora on
You can leave your fedora on

Go on over there and turn on the milk glass light...no all the milk glass lights
Now come back here and stand on this oak swivel chair...that's right
Raise your arms up in to the air...shake 'em
You give me a reason to jitterbug
You give me a reason to lindyhop
You give me a reason to balboa

Suspicious Axis minds are talking
Trying to tear us apart
They say that my Allied love is wrong
They don't know what love is
They don't know what love is
They don't know what love is
They don't know what love is
I know what love is

Joe Cocker sang it for the "9 1/2 Weeks" soundtrack and Kim Bassinger was kind enough to act it out.

But I digress, there are hats I will not wear. I'll wear a fedora, a Panama, a stingy brim straw, but that's about it. I wouldn't wear a homburg, a derby, or a boater, though I would love to. ;)

Keeping it in perspective ...

I think the thing to remember is to keep things in perspective. I believe it is a safe assumption that the majority of the folks here like the style of the 30's and 40's, and try in some way (some, mort than others) to incorporate elements of 30's and 40's style into their wardrobe of today.

While the fedora, for example, never really went out of "style", it did drop out of "popularity". In other words, while wearing a fedora may be somewhat unique today it is not out of style (i.e. it doesn't look "odd"). However, the straw boater or a derby seemed to drop completely out of the picture by the end of the 40's (not totally, but just about).

I think the thing to consider is that the style of the 30's and 40's is about 70 years in the past. How would a man in, say, 1935 look if he wore clothing styled from 1860?

Something to think about ...
