Over the weekend got off a phone call with a prominent jacket maker I was considering. I mentioned that hey I heard there is a considerable upcharge for HH and I was told not really (my immediate thought was hey maybe I'm wrong and it is a few hundred) but it was over 1k. Laughing it off, I said hey that is a lot of money and was told that not really when other brands were charging upwards of 4k and up. I'm sitting there staring at my 689h, thinking about thedi, aero, himel, LW etc and was absolutely speechless and said thanks. I think I'll still keep them on my list but a little lower :) I do not want to mention who this is sorry! just struck dumb by the convo.

hey if anyone can name some 4k HH jackets I'd love to hear them. atelier savas?

Must be Langlitz
no comment! ☺️

I am looking for one more jacket, man this leather jacket bug is contagious, and I am taking my time. Everyday my wishlist keeps changing! I don't know about you guys but I find it equally if not more exciting window shopping and am worried once I get my next jacket, I might want another one! In the meantime I plan to visit Union Garage to check out their V7 jacket, in where I grew up Bridgeport CT of all places!

I do remember hearing that Langlitz was charging and extra 1k for horsehide and that was at least five years ago. As far as $4000 jackets I am not aware of anyone charging that much unless you are talking about the fashion brands. Loro Piana for instance doesn’t have anything under $5800!

To each their own.

Lost Worlds adds extreme charges for minor alterations to sleeve and torso length, Simmons Bilt now charges extra for their old standard hide (CXL HH), and the upcharge at Lewis Leather for their veg tan cow is not for the faint hearted as well.

The list of extra charges at Langlitz however reminds me of car shopping at BMW, Audi or Mercedes. No problem doubling the base price with “extras” that are mere standard for other makers.
Langlitz doesn’t want to do horse. That’s fine, but they might as well be open about it. The up-charge just isn’t objectively justifiable.

Not horsehide, but Chapal is another example of great products with now stratospheric prices. They're a historical French maker that owns and operates its tannery and makes beautiful sheepskin jackets. Their leather is really interesting, it feels both extremely robust and buttery soft, in a way I haven't seen anything else get close to.

However, they have gone into luxury territory over the past decade, with their USAAF model (A2 and G1 hybrid) skyrocketing from <2500 euros to 6000 euros between early 2016 and today.

Two years ago purchased an Aero Half Belt Deluxe Tumbled Cordovan CXFQHH. Few extras it came to £800 including a 10% discount. Same jacket today like for like £1300. For that cash I can have a tailored jacket from BKS Made for Measure and use it on the bike. Saying that the Aero is built like a tank.

Wow. Hadn’t noticed that. I guess, the demand for ultra-thick, non-breathable hides has gone down from when I first started lurking here.
I was going to use mine on the bike. But the leather is still not broken. Alpaca liner is also super warm. Can’t use the jacket in the summer.

Or maybe it has to do with the fact that the hides (Horween) are imported from the US? But it's true, prices for new leather jackets are crazy nowadays.

I have heard that Horween isn’t really tanning the hefty stuff that much anymore. Demand just isn‘t there as it was ten years or so ago. You can still get them, but orders are in slots and - apparently- at a premium price.

Yeah, I remember when I first started frequenting the Lounge back in 2012 everything was about one piece back and thick and stiff as a board.

I could name a few, yeah but at that level, it is all about the brand and not the leather.

My favorite two brands make horsehide jackets that costs $7K upwards so it isn't unheard of but they don't charge any less for either of their other leathers, be it basic or exotic kind. They value every aspect of their craft evenly, material including.

But I don't think that a brand that hasn't done one single new thing in decades has a right to double the prices like that. Langlitz makes good product but literally the only thing they've added to their line of clothes since 1974 is another zero to the price tag.
