Installing or Removing a Hat Liner

I have what may be a basic hat question. What is the value of the hat liner, beyond protecting the inside surface of the felt. Is there any structural or value add with the liner? I have a lid with a shorter crown than I like and I can feel my hair on the inside of the felt. I use a light cream gel in my hair and don't want to ruin the lid. Should I install a liner? If so, where would I get one and how is it done?

Thanks,

They do provide protection of the felt from hair products as well as hold in some body heat. On certain hats that I wear year-round, I remove the liners & put them in for colder months just by tucking the liner behind the seatband. Lots of heat is released thru the top of the head & even tho iti is not a very insulative material or very thick, it is amazing at how much heat the liner does hold in. HTH

From my dim memory of my ungrad Chem-E Heat Transfer course I would suspect that it's the small layer of "dead air" trapped between liner and felt that offers the noticeable insulation in cool weather. The liner material itself would have almost no insulating effect and a thin layer or felt not so much. But even 1/4" of air that is trapped and unable to move freely is a great insulator.

If you do an advanced search for threads with the word LINERS in the title you will find several discussions on this topic. There is also a Lounger among us who specializes in making liners. I believe you will find some of his posts using the same search. :)
