Insane 1915 Shirt, Goodbye!

This shirt deserves the eulogy it's going to get, before it's shipped off to eBay land.

It's deadstock, never worn, fresh-out-of-the-box ... and it's insane. That's right: completely loopy. Made in 1915, this contraption is a combination dress shirt/boxer short. Why wear underpants when your shirt can BE the underpant? The box "explains" it all.

A fascinating piece, this. Nice details: a soft attached collar, a collar bar, mother-of-pearl cufflinks. For the photos, I added a knit tie from the same era.

And rarest of all ... it's a large size. Marked 16 1/2 neck, 34 sleeve.

It's brilliant!

" The shirt tails can't ride up,...and the drawers can't slip down." :)
I just hate when those two things happen! :eusa_doh:

But as necessity is the mother of invention, maybe this was just before the invention of elastic material, safety pins, or both?

And it can even be worn all by itself in hot summer weather! lol

Marc, you're a treasure

I learn SO much from you all the time! Where else would we ever see something like this?

I was wondering how one answered the call of nature - I'd still be wary of that escape hatch.

Add sock garters and you have a man who looks really silly in his underwear.

Neat! Thanks!

I was surpirsed that shirt/underwear didn't catch on, then I had a brainstorm.

Don't wear any underwear and have shirt stripes tattooed on your torso! Your shirt won't ride up and your drawers won't fall down and going to the toilet won't involve stripping to the waist.

Yes but someone paid ....

$205.00 for it. I have some vintage ads somewhere of a similar shirt in a brand called olus. A piece of history gents where men had all sorts of choice, even weird and wonderful ones like this shirt!

Frank Sinatra wore these. The only reason I know this is because someone was selling them on Ebay several years ago. And interestingly, from what I remember, they were from the 70's. I'm sure they were custom made.

I might consider using those if they still made them, though it would probably make more sense to be able to button your shirt tails to your boxers.
Those are my thoughts, anyway.

One piece wear

Remember that at the time many men wore 'combinations' - one-piece underwear - so a combination shirt and shorts would'nt have seemed quite as unusual as it does now.
