Thank you for the correction sir!, What I meant is that Penman had a relation in such ways that they too were making the Indy hats correct? Yes there was a few personnel involved in the making and collaborations etc. as well.

By the way? Which of the Indy models you have atm?

Any of my hats that I have or had as Indy hats were done up to look as much like Raiders hats as possible. None of the hats from the other movies did it for me.

When I 'Raider' a hat, I look at the top crease, front pinch (including height), brim shape and possible turn, and the degree to which I can mushroom the crown.

Most of those hats no longer sport complete Indy characteristics, as I have been modding them to better suit my face/head, as I am not Harrison Ford.

We picture and see the INDY hats all over the web or in person and of course you start thinking " How would I look with that hat on me " question. You want it look as good as what you see and then you try it on and go WTF? Not me at all look in your face. Of all the INDY models that came out by the original makers and what now version you have to take it with a grain of salt really as some version/take do look better on you than the original ones besides the other version model released, but then again in the end we are not Harrison Ford here!

You can make an INDY look good to you by the bash and flips and folds, whatever works but know yourself if that hat is for you or not. Those original initial made ones are really nice and hard to come by now.

The only Indy hat I want now is a one of the new Herbert Johnson reissues. There are still some skeptics, but I look at that hat and I see the hat. I want one even though the Raiders hat isn't my favorite Indy lid and even though I really don't need any more brown hats.....

My original plan, 10 months ago, with this Penman, was to have a Raiders hat made with the green felt and copper ribbon.

Through many discussions, the hat's specs changed a few times until I ended up with The Penman model. Since I have received it, it has been taking on some Raiders characteristics, but not all of them.

I was happy when I got it, but I am happier with each change I make.

The first thing I do with any Indy hat, or any hat, for that matter, is bring the top of the front pinch down to 4.25 inches (if it is taller than that to begin with). That is the height that works best for me. I then shape the rest of the crown to work with that front height.

If it works as an Indy hat, then great. If it doesn't that's good, too, because I have learned how to make just about any crown work for me, given that there is enough material to begin with.

By the Indy 'high crown' model I assume you mean the Raiders hat.

Fact is, many people crease these hats taller than they are meant to be. I have it on very good authority that the front of the Raiders hat crease is 4 1/2" tall, which is no taller than many fedoras owned by our members, for example.

Interesting. Like many, I just assumed it was taller than that. But after reading your post and looking at some photos, I'm convinced you're right and it's not as tall as I'd thought. My hats are creased at about 4-1/4" at the front, mostly by accident rather than intent because that's just how they looked good to me (and on me, I think) while I was shaping them. Maybe one of these days I'll re-crease one of 'em a little higher just to see whether or not I like it.

No wrong way, just different. Cool that we have the options to go in so many different directions. Your hats always look amazing and I study your crease work like it was a text book. Someday I’ll take the plunge into a genuine Indy hat, and I agree the ROTLA is the one to have.

I was never that bright about it. I'd get a new hat, shape the crown and brim as I thought looked best, and wear it. Lather, rinse, repeat. It was only after I finally took a photo of my three Fed IVs side by side that I realized they were nearly identical (except for color) and decided to measure the crowns. I clearly have a preference for the way my hats look when they're freshly creased, but after that I'm not meticulous about maintaining those shapes and I let the hats develop their own character.

I also found a video review on youtube that was basically useless, except for discovering that advintage was/is making their hats from Christy's Adventurers hats. I'm not quite sure what that was/is all about because the reviewer/owner knew basically nothing about the hat, except that it looked like a Raiders hat and he loved it, or possibly hats, in general.

Thank you for the help. I’ve read the old reviews here on the Lounge, but seeing that the pricing is quite attractive and yet they aren’t very popular I wondered if I was missing something. I have enough lemons. I do appreciate all the leg work.
