I'm looking for a hat. In an unusual place.

Greetings, merry hat wearers,

I'm new here, as you may have already realised. My name is Bruce and I am seeking a hat. Alas, I do not live in America, or even Europe for that matter; indeed, I am dwelling in South Africa, Cape Town to be precise.

I need a fedora, but I do not know where to find one here. Hats are a rare spectacle where I reside, so I would not know who to ask, and besides, who would take seriously the request ofa 16 year old to purchase, of all things, a fedora?

Many thanks for your considerate answere (and I pray for their arrival),

Bruce

Welcome to the Lounge Bruce! Glad to have you here.
The best thing is to search the Lounge [hat section] and see what you come up with that you like.
The 'net and E-Bay are good places to start when you are searching for what you find you want. There are plenty of vendors here that will be glad to help fit you in a fedora also!
Good luck
.

Good gosh. A reply already? This must be happy hour!

Thanks for the response. I knew I'd probably have to resort to eBay eventually, but i was hoping to try the hat in person before buying it. Of course, as they say, beggers can't be choosers.

Welcome to the Lounge, Bruce

Echoing the advice RBH offered, you may want to check the vendors here or check out eBay. Have you decided on what style of Fedora you want? There are a lot of different varieties out there...

Again, that is the very torment I suffer. Were I unable to wear the hat prior to purchase, i simply could not know what style is best for my person.

Most vendors have guides on which styles and sizes go with which head shapes. Additionally, there are a ton of pictures of Lounge members wearing their lids. Find some you think look cool or "right for you" and ask about them.

Most hat vendors will take returns if the hat doesn't work out (I think).

Have you had a chance to see if Stuttafords carries any Fedoras? You may be able to try some on there.

Stuttafords? I hadn't thought of them.

I should go and take a peek when next I am at that seething shopping centre.

I know I saw some at Markhams somewhere, but they most certianly not felt. They may have been straw, but not felt.

Nothing wrong with a straw! That may be an less expensive way for you to find out what type and style fedora you like.

Try the straw, find one you like, note the size, crown height and brim, then order the same thing in a grey felt. [huh]

I can also recommend HatsDirect as easy to work with.

I do feel your pain. Not all of us are lucky enough to live in places with hat shops around.

Once you figure out your size, it's usually brim dimensions and crown height that take getting used to.

Give it time, all hats are going to seem odd when you've never worn one.

And then the addiction sets in. :)
