I Was Sold By The Preview

Name a film or films in which you at first saw the preview in the theater, or elsewhere, that convinced you to see the film, and the act succeeded.

The previews for me are one of the joys of being in a movie theater. I never enjoy being late, because I miss the previews. Some I laugh from, other's uninteresting, but there are some that just capture my attention. I have created my own movie previews so I can fully understand the power of those three minutes.

The preview for The Chronicles of Narnia had me sold. I read the novels, I knew the stories, I had watched parts of the television program as well as the animated film. To see that there was a motion picture with real people had me thinking about it all up until it hit the theaters.

I've done this many times. Sometimes, I'll see the previews and know that I'll want the DVD. But, I'll do you one better: I was sold on The Green Mile when I saw the poster. :D

I'd recently finished the book when a friend took me to see The Blair Witch Project (the camera work made me nauseaus, but I still enjoyed it) for my birthday. On the way out of the theater, there was the poster for TGM. I actually stopped, backed up and walked over to it.

I was very impressed with how closely the movie had followed the book: even the characters looked as I'd imagined them while reading it - especially Brutal, played by David Morse. He looked exactly as I'd imagined him. I saw it in the theater and then bought it on tape, later replacing it with the DVD.

A VHS preview, while watching the movie Fireworks by Beat Takeshi, won me over instantly. It was for the movie Underground by Emir Kusturica. I was intrigued immediately, went out and rented it -- and now I own it. Great flick.

LoTR's I remember I got chills and it was a year away.

Star Wars Ep I.

I remember I went to go see "Meet Joe Black" just to see the preview of Star Wars.

I think cable should have a 24 hour preview channel.

When I went to go see The Cat's Meow (2002) in the theatre I saw the preview for The Importance Of Being Earnest (2002) and knew I had to go see it. I wouldn't have heard of it any other way.

So a few weeks later we went to see it. A LOT of people got up and walked out, but I enjoyed it (even though they bastardized some of it!) Oh well. It was what it was!

I saw a trailer for this movie when I watched Nancy Drew, and I was laughing out loud. As for the rest of the previews, the slapstick and bathroom humor just left me cold.

The previews for Fight Club, The Beach (ended up not nearly as good as the book) and Dark Blue World all made me pay for the tickets for the full length flicks.
