I don't understand why they trash Borsalinos.

I'm a newbie, but even I know that if you're selling something, you don't sabotage your sale by saying it's a crappy product, especially if you're a dealer of this product. So I don't understand this eBay description. (This seller does this on their other ads for Borsalinos too.)

Please note this is Genuine Borsalino Hat and I am a Borsalino hat dealer

Borsalino hats are made in Italy by the oldest Italian hat maker. These hats are very pretty but over priced very poorest quality and workmanship fur felt hats. If you require the finest hats in the world we make them see our custom hand made hat auctions.

While this auction is for the Genuine Borsalino Trilby and we are Borsalino dealers, it is a piece of crap hat. Total junk as all the Borsalino hats that are made now a days.

My real question is, what are they talking about? I thought Borsalinos were highly sought after, well made hats? At least that's the impression I've received from veteran hatters on FL.

Yeah we have all seen him before, best to ignore his listings he sets his reserve at atleast as much as a new one from any dealer would run you. I think its just to get a rise from bidders getting frustrated.

I think it also comes from the whole vintage versus new rantings we have read and seen. The older hats tended to be made better with better marterials. It is not to say that all current hats are totally crappy but the collectors of vintage would steer you to vintage for that better quality. New has its advantages too as your selection for size and color is more available, vintage is limited to that which comes up for auction or what you find locally, and that simply tends to be a bit more limited.

It is an unfortunate way to advertise a hat, I find it annoying and would avoid the auction simply because of the way it is presented.

And, might I add, my early 1980's Borsalino's are very nice. The felt is soft, soft, soft. OK, that's undoubtedly because they are "velours" (velvet) and it may be argued that they don't keep their bash very well but...nice hats indeed. This guy on eBay is just taking advantage of the technological evolution the old "desktop publishing" has taken...like we are (except he doesn't seem to respect any deontological codes...)

To expand on what has already been said-

this eBay hat guy takes the example of Borsalino, as an established, premium hat brand which people discover (true or false)to be one of "best"quality.
He then implies that these Borsalinos are inferior to his "hand made" hats due to their mass production and average materials.
So it's a quirky, way of saying that his hats are far superior to these so-called quality Borsalinos... and part way to an excuse or justification for his very high prices- taking an established, foreign, premium brand, which people are prepared to pay for and putting his product above it.

But beyond this- using the word and name "Borsalino" to attract eBay punters to his auctions, for his anonymous fare.

It's amazing that Borsalino haven't tried to put an end to this behaviour and his agency.
