Heath Ledger overdosed and died. Britney Spears is back in rehab-no wait, she's out, no wait, she's on her way back after freaking out her kids. Paris Hilton...blah blah blah!!!
WHO CARES!!!!!:rage:

I may sound a little insensitive here, but THESE ARE NOT REAL PEOPLE!! They have not done anything substantial for humanity and society that they should receive the millions of $$$ and sooooooo much attention. The media keeps saying "...what a tragedy; I hope he/she gets the help they need, we can't wait to see him/her back in action..."

Meanwhile, our REAL American heroes are overseas fighting- allowing us to pursue such trivial matters as peace and democracy. Our severlely underpaid teachers are raising our kids on a continuously cut budget. Police and firemen are risking their lives daily so we can sleep at night. Doctors and nurses are working overloaded schedules. The list goes on and on - you get the point....

What has happened to us as a Nation???

In all seriousness, I don't think it's any different than it has ever been. The infatuation with celebrity disgusts me. I think those people and there situations are sad (some pathetic), but they should be personal, family matters...not fodder for the public. Just my two cents worth. [huh]

So why post yet another 'discussion' about them?...instead...maybe spend the 30 min you spend typing that out....to send a letter to service person or go volunteer.

Why put -more- publicity out there for what you don't want attention given to.

oh...wait, I forgot that it's easier to sit around expounding on forums about how -awful- things are...instead of leaving the computer and going to DO something to help.

The only thing I care about from any celebrity is what they provide on stage and screen: I couldn't care less about their private conditions. Unfortunately, the pervasiveness of the media covering their personal lives makes it impossible to avoid it completely.

Interesting fact -- "National Geographic" has a consistently higher average monthly circulation than "People," "Us," "Entertainment Weekly," or any of the other celeb rags. Maybe there's hope after all.

That truly is comforting.

:p I'm a cop, I was in the military; my wife is a teacher, she was a social worker before that. We both volunteer. So- I've earned my attitude. I spent maybe 30 seconds typing that. I'm hoping that others will read that and maybe it will prompt someone to think about where our priorities are.

In all seriousness, I don't think it's any different than it has ever been.

It is something that has and is bothering me alot lately. I do volunteer work at a food pantry and work for my church. 7 of my nephews and niece have done time in the military in last few years also. 2 of them 2 tours of duty in Iraq.

Last night on the local news they showed 2 lovely 17 yr. old girls that had stolen $150.00 from a 9 yr. old girl scout selling cookies. Their attitude was unbelievable. "Like I cannot believe now I have to take my time away from my uh yeah partying to deal with this."
Then a young father stomped on his 3 month old first born sons head and killed him and chunked him and his car seat out on the road.
I believe this I would say 22 and below age kids coming up are so flat bored they will do anything. By the time a kid is 10 now they have seen it all and probably done it all.
I believe in God and I pray.

Police and firemen are risking their lives daily so we can sleep at night

This is what I was telling my honey this morning. Can you imagine the detective that has to sit across from this dude to find out what has happened and not reach out and want to take the law in his hands?
The sky is not falling but how low can we go. We need to all mentor at least one to do different. Sometimes just telling a kid you are doing great that is and telling them when they are doing wrong counts. Some have raised themselves like wild dogs really or each other.
Thank you for your post. At least I know I am not the only one.
Oh, and I appreciate your work as a cop keeping someone safer.

Good post citRon
Some just don't want to hear about how disgusting it has become....and perhaps pompously assume all someone has attempted to do about it is provide lip service. In reality....many find those with a permissive attitude and closed mouths as the real offenders. Sadly..THAT alone...can make most honest efforts...like spitting in an ocean.....

Fair enough...but do you -seriously- think anyone -here- is the real issue?

This is not the 'Celeb gossip board' for goodness sakes.....perhaps 1% of any of the content here deals with anything MODERN let alone the things you see as most problematic in the world today.

Good point. Here's a perfect example:

No, I don't feel anyone here is the issue. On the contrary, in my time spent in the Lounge, I have had the pleasure of stimulting conversation with like-minded, conciencious individuals.

Since we already have threads that cover tabloid topics, including these two specific topics; since this one has had more than its share of contentiousness; and since arguing with a bartender is never the best way to make friends around here, I am shutting this one down and redirecting you all to the aforementioned threads located elsewhere in the OB.
