Hurricane central (UPDATE)

Hopefully everybody down south and in Florida is doing well. Here in SC, we have just received a lot of rain (almost 4 inches in 1 hour at my house), and are starting to get some 15-20 mph winds. We are not going to receive the brunt of Bonnie.

Charley looks more damaging. Once it gets past Cuba, and hits the warm waters of the gulf, I expect it will gain some strength.

Any other folks out there have any weather reports?

Hurricanes don't like communists... Cuba is getting pounded:p

Hopefully they evacuated the population to the east side of the island.

Update: Just got a report from Roger Lewis (SHARPETOYS). Their power is now out, and they're getting hit with a bunch of rain and wind. Nothing like they're getting in Ft Myers, but it's on the way. Let's all keep them down there in our thoughts and prayers.

PS, he said that if he expires or is driven out to sea, Panama Bob and I get to split his hat collection.

Let's pray it doesn't come to that :)

I haven't heard from Roger since last night. They were getting 100mph winds around where he lives, so I'm going to call and get an update this morning sometime. It's right off our coast now. Hopefully it'll take a turn for the north. 6:24 am right now, and it is as dark as can be outside. It's usually much lighter than this.

I've been through a few Hurricanes so it might be a few days before communications are restored. All we can do is hope they all are well and keep them in our prayers. I think Marlowe is in Florida also near Sharptoys.

We are doing fine here in Florence. I am roughly 60 miles from the water. My in laws are 30 miles from the water, and they're getting hammered. We aren't even getting any rain or wind.

I haven't been able to get a hold of Roger either. Like you, I suspect that the phones and/or power is out there.

Just like in Key Largo

Tonight I heard that Florida got hammered, and 13 people are dead. Maybe more. I hope Roger is fine and his place is safe.

I just noticed the link / photo I posted above continues to update the actual weather in REAL TIME. I thought I was just grabbing a shot of the current landfall of the storm two days ago. WOW.

Rog, if you are out there, our prayers are there too. Bet your lines are down.

Jo an and i thank all of you for your prayers. I spent a better part of a year building our new home and it came thru like a bunker. We had 78 mpr winds for about one hour.We had zero damage. Some of my friends lost there roofs, fences, and tons of oak trees but no loss of life in my town.
We just got our power back along with our phone service. We are lucky some folks it will be up to a week or more before they get theirs back on. I will buy a generator soon.
God Bless to all,

Roger

Welcome back my friend!!! Have you heard from Marlowe?
and finally the important question..how was the "Hurricane party"?
For those on the West coast, this is when the neighbors and friends get together in the strongest house and wait the storm out amongst those we care about. To try to keep the thoughts positive we would play cards, games, some cocktails might be involved, just general group support.!

Marlowe here. Had to wait until I got to work to check the board. Still no power at my house. I'm okay. The winds knocked down a fence and a tree at my house. No damage to the house itself except for a solar water-heating panel on the roof of the garage which got somewhat mangled..

I would have called Roger (Sharpetoys) but his number is on the computer... Glad to hear you came through okay, Roger.

No air conditioning, no hot water, no lights. Life without electricity in Florida is not as much fun as life with it.

Glad you're OK Marlowe...sorry about the damage.

Here's my wife's story. She left the house Saturday morning at 7 to fly to Norfolk VA via Pittsburgh. She got to Pittsburgh all right, but her flight to Norfolk was diverted to LaGuardia. They left LaGuardia mid afternoon for the flight to Norfolk in a 40-seater. It couldn't land, so went back to D.C. They were shuttled by bus from D.C to Norfolk where she arrived about midnight... a mere 9 hrs after her ETA.

Obviously, this was a hassle, but she couldn't really complain since they all arrived safely with no personal property damage.
