I'm not very knowlegeable about Bogey, but how accurate is that link?

In any case it's a interesting & good read. I enjoyed passages from it and treat it like if I was reading from the Inquirer. For the most part it intrigues me & makes me question the G rated history that I was brought up to believe.

Hollywood isn't clean & why would it be, so IMHO I would have to say this was a embellished factual account of that era. [huh]

It reads like fanfic to me.

Hollywood may be "dirtier" than the average film historian would delve into, but that particular piece of reading was so weirdly salacious that to pass it off as "embellished fact" just doesn't sit right with me.

....and while we're about it: I read somewhere (and cannot for the life of me remember where) that Bogies' birthday was not actually on Christmas day, but a day or two either before or after Christmas and some studio boss decided to give his birthday as 25th December on press releases etc thinking it would sound good. Alternately, I could be wrong.

While that was common practice, he really was born on Christmas in this case. 1900 census and newspaper birth announcements proved it long ago.

nitpicker!

It's actually on January 23, 1899 as this article states

I stand corrected :eusa_clap [I wouldn't have learned that if I didn't post this thread... thanks]

How TCM could get something like this wrong is beyond me. 1900 census:

So I was right- for once!I have an idea that I read this in a biography of Leslie Howard, he and Humph being buddies. Howard gave him his first big break in Petrified Forest, it's ironic that today Bogart is as famous as ever, and Leslie Howard is little-known outside vintage movie circles.

so who is correct about Bogies B'day.... I'm totally confused now :eusa_doh:
I don't think I'd argue with a 1900 census and a 1/10/1900 newspaper announcement which shows him as being born December 1899, not to mention that he celebrated his birththday on 12/25 his whole life, not just when he started acting. If there was some manipulation of his birth date, it must have been done by his parents in December 1899, or prior to 1/10/1900, but I seriously doubt it ;)

I read a substantial chunk of it. Very . . . . stimulating. . . to say the least. There are obviously highly fictionalized parts, maybe some conversations drastically paraphrased. But whether the specific incidents took place or not, I think it gives a terrifically vivid picture of New York at the height of the Jazz Age in the early 20's. A lot of the assertions about various individuals' orientations I've read in other reliable places. And George Raft was definitely a pretty serious gangster, as well as dancer. So, take it with a grain of salt, but I think there's a lot of truth in this hilarious book.

I highly recommend that everyone read the book Bogart by A. M. Sperber and Eric Lax.

A very good book, with quite a lot of gritty realism in it.
