Was it seen a lot in sport coats and the such in America? I believe it gained more popularity in the 50's, but how common was it in early 40's and throughout after the war?

I know that the British Movie Stars who based themselves in Southern California for the duration of WW2 took to wearing tweeds, having Afternoon tea, playing Croquet, and generally trying to create a home from home, Woman were just as fond of their tweeds as menfolk
