A few weeks ago somebody put a mint Stratoliner on auction for an opening bid of $450.00 with a "buy now" of $500.00. It included a Stratoliner club card and an original Stratoliner box. It received no bids.

It was relisted at a lower opening bid and finally it sold for $150.00. My point is maybe, just maybe, hat folks are not prepared to pay such astronomical fees for an arguably classic fedora even in mint condition. Of course it always comes down to whatever the traffic will bear...

I have to admit I really enjoy seeing sellers like that brought back down to earth. I'm all for capitalism, but there are some characters out there who are just too opportunistic and who are simply avaricious. They don't want to partcipate in a given market so much as burn it for whatever they can get out of it. On more than one occasion, I've had to restrain myself from sending a message to a seller telling them to 'get real'!

I remember glancing over this one. What size was the stratoliner? If smaller than 7 1/2-7 5/8, the seller was in dreamland.

I'm not of the opinion that the Stratoliner (or the Open Road, for that matter) is a particularly special hat. It just managed to get itself a reputation. And "iconic" status. Is it better than other Stetsons? Not likely.

if it's the one I think that you're talking about, it was 7-1/4. It was in the original box, with a stratoliner (not DC-3) hat pin, and a stratoliner (the airplane) club membership card, as well as some other stratoliner document.

c-note

I would rather go custom then pay more then a c-note on a vintage hat.

I would make an exception if the sale was in person and the hat was all that.
