Well, how high is high?

With regular off-the-rack suits, I see that some men hang their trousers on their hip bones, while others wear them at least an inch above the belly button. (I've been doing this for ages without realising.)

So, what is high-cut, 30s-cut Hollywood style etc.? How high above the belly button is the upper brim?

Right, I could have asked for the height measured in gradient angle of the potbelly globe, though this kind of trousers is usually even higher in the back.

an inch above the navel is the standard height for 30s/40s trousers.
higher in the back obviously if they have a fish-tail back waistband.

^ Those are very high. Agree with the 1" above navel being standard. Though each to their own taste. I have a 1946 pair of trousers with quite a low waist - approx 1.5" below the navel.
