How do you break in a new hat?

What I want to know is how did you trace the shape of your head? Did you just get it from a hat that fits you well?

that's the tricky part. I took a suggestion I found somewhere else on the lounge, which was to take a stiff piece of paper (like the kind they use to make file folders), cut a hole in it and continue trimming it bit by bit until it fits around your head the way you want your hat to. Then I traced that onto the wood.

another which I learned of later, which may work better, is to get a "conformer" tape- I haven't tried one myself so I can't tell you much more about that.
