How are hatpins ... pinned?

I had a quick look through some "hatpin" threads, but they wuynt any quick replies to
"how do (hat)pins ... get pinned to the hat".

OK, I seen the "I like Ike" collectible political pin, which is a very cheap article with a side-mounted "horizontal" pin, I suppose to be affixed to the hatband.
(Or is this to be stuck through the felt  )

I would think maybe hatpins would be ...like...er...pins, like some earrings, a pin mounted vertically to the plane of the "ornamental statement", to go straight through the hatband and/or felt, with some "retaining clip" at the rear. I don't like this idea, for various reasons, not the least that any accidental (or not) side impact onto that pin would tend to drive an, albeit short, spike into one's skull.

How are hatpins, then, afixed to the hat?

I only own one fedora with a hat pin. The vintage Knox with the horse head pin I posted on the e-bay thread. The horse head's pin is horizontal and goes into the ribbon behind the bow. This hat has a cloth type ribbon and so it is not really affected by the pin being taken in or out. You can't see any hole in the ribbon. I have owned numerous western hats with pins. All have the same horizontal pin and go into the ribbon right at the nott, where the ribbon is tied. In his photo of the Steson Saxon it appears the pin goes into the ribbon behind the bow so any small hole it made would not be seen.

This is not my pin, but it has the type clasp I like for fedoras.
I usually pin it though the keeper on the bow.

note: see the pin on my Stratoliner in my avatar.

Ok and thanks, RBH.
In a way, this kind of pin attachment seems the acceptable way, not going through the felt...
In another way, it means I won't myself accept using a nice Porsche pin I have: that would need to be pushed straight through the hatband as well as the felt AND possibly even sweatband, have probable comfort consequences, and maybe even safety considerations all of which render this a definite NO NO.
No pins for me, right now!
