So I bought this Lee

for five bucks. The shipping cost more than the hat. It was a size 7, which is WAY too small for me, but I liked the wide, bound-edge brim and I figured it was hard to go wrong at that price. I could always give it away if I couldn't make it fit. It was dirty and thoroughly frumpy looking in the eBay photos. And in actuality it was indeed as funky as the photos indicated. So I cleaned it in naptha and stretched it 'til it screamed. Indeed, I stretched it so much that the button for the fake windstring broke loose from the bow. (Those faux windstrings have no elasticity to speak of.) After one of the initial stretching sessions I dropped the hat on my head and it was so loose it rested on my ears. And then I felt it try to return to its original size. So back on the stretcher it went for another overnight stay. (Yes, this is all contrary to the best thinking in the field. But again, it's only a five-dollar hat.)
Anyway, I got it to hold its new size (something a bit larger than a 7 1/4 but smaller than a 7 3/8), and it had remarkably little crown taper, considering the abuse I visited upon it. But it just didn't look right in the bash I generally prefer: a straight center dent and a medium fedora pinch. So I tried it this way, a sort of stovepipe with a whatever-you-call-it top treatment.

I like it, but my wife, who has such exquisite taste in men that her aesthetic assessments ought be heeded, feels otherwise. So what do you all think? And what should I call this bash?
I understand that Lee was a "workingman's hat," a Chevy in a world of Lincolns and Cadillacs. But its quality seems pretty darned good to me. The felt is a nice medium weight and it feels dense, and the leather and the liner and the ribbon are equally nice. And besides, I've always kinda liked Chevys.

One more thing: Any estimates as to its vintage?

Nope, it just doesn't work!

Honestly that is the wrong type of crown for that type of hat. Here's one that would look better. You put in the center dent and then toward the back you put in another dent the opposite direction and then put in a front pinch at the top. I think this pic shows what I mean. Give it a try and see what you think.

It's reminiscent of a Clint Eastwood hat from some of his westerns.

Can't beat a $5.00 hat, though! Glad it has sized up for you.

Yes, I think that the height of that crown is just begging for a pinch or some other shaping like TonyB indicates. It appears to me to be a bit too tall for the flat top. It's almost like a porkpie that's too tall.

For 5.00 it's a good deal . It would cost more for the band alone today . Lee made good hats .
Enjoy your fedora!!:cool2:

One caveat, gents: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO STRETCH A HAT AS MUCH AS I STRETCHED THIS ONE, unless it's a hat you bought cheap and wouldn't be able to wear otherwise. This lid looks better in that photo than it does on my head. A look in the mirror reveals that it does indeed taper in a bit at the bottom of the crown, and then returns to vertical near the top of the ribbon. Why? Because it's larger at the bottom. It's not so dramatic that the hat is rendered unwearable by it, but it is something a hat aficionado would notice. I may reblock it one of these days, or perhaps put it on one of those commercial-grade stretchers to make its size more consistent top to bottom, but for now it's a rainy-day hat. And at the end of that rainy day I'll put it back on a stretcher, lest it be too small come morning.

Hey Tony that's my hat! I have that exact hat in our proper size of 7 3/8. I certainly didn't get your deal, but it was a fair price. It has a center crease front to back with the front a bit higher than the back. Though no whippet, it is a very nice everyday hat that I like. I like your take on the bash, though, so maybe I need to rethink things when it makes its eventual trip to the tank.
Eric (Gotta get me one of those commercial grade stretchers)

Yeah, I'm with you there, Eric. An assortment of proper tools and a few ruined hats along the way (while we were getting the hang of it) and we'd end up with more well-fitting, good-looking old lids than we'd know what to do with.
I have it on good authority that the secrets of hat renovation are in the possession of a bearded monk who resides in a hut high in the Himalayas, but he'll tell you, via email, everything you need to know. (He has a satellite Internet connection, an old iBook and a methane-powered generator. The yaks see to it that the methane never runs out. It's a pretty sweet setup.)

Back in the day a million guys wore everyday hats of average quality and saved the Sunday best for Sunday. Nothing wrong with that.
