Hey, That Guy's Got A Nice Hat

I met my mother for lunch today and parked my Alessandria on the empty chair beside me, as usual (only because my mother finds it offensive to leave it on as I do when dining alone or with my wife). After I finished eating I excused myself to the men's room and told my mom I'd meet her in the front lobby.

We settled the check at the cash register then I turned around and saw a young man holding a great-looking Fedora. I muttered "Nice hat" right as I realized I'd left mine in that chair when I got up to leave. So I told my mom I was going to get my hat and the guy says "Hat? Is someone looking for a hat?".

Of course it was my hat that he had found after we left. I knew we don't see many nice Borsalinos around here...

None of your business!
:eusa_doh: Funny story, but imagin the nerve of the guy,
you'd think mos people would have the decency to give it
to the front desk saying someone must have forgotten or
lost it..! Did you get it back?

Right. I have to reinforce my automatic reaction to check for hat before leaving anyplace, especially restaurants, where I leave them on the chair. I've been lucky so far, but one of these days I think I'm going to lose.

Actually, he was the floor manager of the restaurant and had bolted out to the parking lot looking for me while I was in the men's room.

Hey Brent, is that the hat you were going to take traveling? If so, how did it do, getting rolled up and unrolled, etc?

What I find interesting is that your table was vacated while you were away and no one took the hat, whether you or your companion(s - just for illustrative purposes).
What I find even more interesting is that, you forgot it to begin with. lol

I can't imagine even leaving my house without wearing one, let alone a restaurant, I'd almost feel like I was walking out naked.....but that's just me, take no offense Brent. [huh]

I would have definitely noticed once I stepped outside into the blazing sun without it. But crowded elbow to shoulder in a noontime restaurant lobby I'd be doing good to notice if I left my head behind. I hate crowds. Plus, to be honest, when I'm helping my mom navigate and so forth I'm pretty distracted anyway.

Blackthorn,

No this is the Alessandria I've had for a while. The new one is an Astuccio and it did just fine going to England and back. Turns out I never rolled/folded it at all. I actually wore it on the plane for eight hours, with a few head-airing-out breaks while it perched on my lap.

It looks a little wavy here and there after several days of 20mph+ wind. Mostly, it has a little "twist" to the front of the (unbound) brim where I kept my hand clamped to it any time I was walking outdoors in the wind. I need to hit it with some steam and flatten that spot out. But otherwise it was a wonderful hat-companion for my English holiday.

Here's a shaky cell-phone snapshot taken on the train from London Bridge to Gatwick a little before midnight on the evening before I came home. You can make out the crimp in the front of the brim in the photo. Both myself and the Astuccio are looking a little the worse for wear by this point.

Yep, the same happens to me on occasion......that's when I say,"Oops, I forgot my hat." No biggie. I do the same with umbrellas, only much more often.
