Help with sizing of older N3B parka....

I have decided to buy an older N3b parka, with wool insulation and Coyote fur ruff. They can be had for $150 or so in mint condition. I understand they run a little big. I am 6', with 42" chest and 34" waist. Probably will not be wearing any thicker mid-layers with N3b, as they are very warm. Do you think size M would do, I should I go with L?

Now is a good time - there seem to be plenty about....I am 6'2" 42" chest and 34 waist and L is plenty big enough so you need to think about what fit you want.....unfortunately I have gibbon arms whihc means I often have to go for a longer fit when Med would suit. Honestly you should be fine with med.....

I just picked up a mid-50s one (which I won't be keeping) and it's not a good fit for me. I'm 6'1" and 41" chest and it's far to "wide" in the chest and too short in the sleeves. It has raglan sleeves, which would normally be pretty forgiving with sleeve length, but the wool insulation makes the coat keep it's shape and so the sleeves don't slump down much. Basically, it's too short. And the newer military issue version (which they still issue) are also too short. I don't think anyone who wears a Tall/Long size should bother with N3Bs, new or vintage.

I have purchased a N3b from Silvermans, their own label. Pretty good quality, and the sizing is spot on. Silvermans claims their parkas have a little heavier outer shells and fillings than other well known brands. I can attest it's pretty warm. Also, the outer shell has a nice dark sage tinge,not too shiny. Even the synthetic fur trim doesn't look or feel cheap. All in all, I am a happy camper. For 75 sterling, it definitely is a bargain.

I'm glad you've got a parka that works for you. Getting a vintage nylon parka in "mint" condition would have cost you a lot of money. The times when guys like Atticus built up a collection of minty vintage nylon for pocket money are long in the past.
