Help with random hat please!

Hi guys

I was lucky enough to pick up this hat on ebay for the princely sum of £1!

It's in wonderful condition and of a heavy dressweight felt. From a bit of googling it seems as if it was a bespoke hat made for a gentleman's outfitters in Ireland. I was wondering if anyone may have any idea of the age of the hat from the rather odd (from my limited experience!) liner, which seems to be like a soft woven jute, perhaps?

Thanks in advance

Hey thanks for replying mayserwegener. The sweatband says 'the traveller' and the wording on the liner is jj hanniffy of birr, Ireland. The crest is Latin. I will get a close up done tomorrow morning (uk time).

Can't help you with the hat but the coat of arms & moto ( A safe harbour for ships) may well be that of the city of Cork.

Hey, thanks for the info Lean! That's pretty cool! Although having just googled it, Birr is in county Offaly and not Cork. I suppose it could of been a customer request as the whole piece looks hand done. I'm guessing it's a generic hat body however it says Irish manufactured so figure it's not just a London hat with a local liner put in. Anyone know anything about Irish hat firms!?

The outfitters could just be a gentleman's clothes shop & not necessarily the hat maker. The fact that it has ' The Traveller' stamped on the sweatband does suggest that it might have been a mass produced hat rather than a custom job, the problem is that many hat manufacturers produce models named The traveller' .............is there any info on the reverse side of the sweatband, writing, stamps, tickets etc. ?
This could just be one of the countless anonymous hats made in the 50's & 60's, some were of good quality others less so & it is very hard to track their origin as records from these smallish hat companies that have since closed down, haven't been kept.
The perferated liner might help some folk narrow down the date of manufacture though.

Yeah that's pretty much what I figured. The felt quality is superb though, at least as good if not better than a 1960's Bates I own. There's still a JJ Hanniffy outfitters in Birr according to mr Google so I may send them a letter and photograph.
