Hi Guys, my first time here in the lounge. I have been collecting and wearing 30s and 40s clothing now for almost 6 years but have only just purchased my first two hats and I have a few issues that I am hoping you more knowledgeable fellows out there might be able to help me with.

The first hat I purchased was a pilgrim fedora dark grey in colour with a black 1 1/8 inch heigh ribbon on the crown. Brim width is 2 1/4 inches. Crown height at front is about 4 1/4 inches and at back it is 3 3/4 inches. It is labelled CUSHION COMFORT on the sweatband and is a size 7 3/8. It fits good. It is made of what I am assuming is a very fine fur as the texture of the hat material is very smooth like a very fine suede. It has a snall piece of material sewn all around the edge of the brim. I love this hat.

The second hat is a dark tan colour fedora from the Golden Gate Hat Company. It has a 1 3/4 inch high ribbon and the brim is only 1 7/8 inch wide. The crown height at the front and back is 4 inches. This hat appears to be made of a different material as it is much coarser in texture and although it looks like a felt it appears to be a much cheaper material than the apilgrim hat. It does not seem to hold its shape as well. The edge of the brim does not have a material edge. Instead it has been folded over and stitched. I do not like this hat.

I have a few questions for all of you out there:

(1) any idea as to the age of both hats.
(2) can anyone tell me the difference between the material used in both hats as I wish to purchase a couple more hats but only want them in the material that the pilgrim is made in.

If I need to provide any more information I will gladly do so. Hope to learn heaps here. Cheers.

Welcome aboard, TCMADDICT! And let me be the first to say...

lol

Seriously, photos of the hats, both inside and out to include photos of the liner and sweatband, any markings, and descriptions of any labels found on the inside of the sweatband are needed by the knowledgeable gentlemen here.

From the Classic Hatmakers List thread (which can be found in the sticky thread Links to Important Hat Forum Threads):

Pilgrim
The Pilgrim brand had a long and successful life as a brand of Sears clothing for men, first appearing in 1905, and hitting its high point in the 1940s. Most Pilgrim brand hats were made by Lee for Sears, and the product line continued until 1964.

I've heard of the Golden Gate Hat Company, but my impression is that they're a hat seller, not maker. I could be wrong.

Again, Welcome!

Cheers,
Tom

Hiya TCMADDICT & welcome aboard, glad to see ya' here.
To post photos you must have a host like photobucket.com and post them from there. It is quite easy & intuitive, very little hassle.
