I'm not sure what hat this is, can anyone identify it?

Looks like every old western hat I have bought. About a 3 1/2" brim. Soak it, pop the crown out and flatten the brim. Here are some pictures from one I did years ago.
How I got it

Crown knocked out

With a telescope crown (what your picture looks like)

Hope that helps.
This was my final result. John Wayne style

Hope that helps.

you've hit the nail on the head I think, that hat in black is pretty much it, I'd forgotten about such a thing as an open crown.

what was the name of the type of hat you bought?

thanks for the help.

Name and type of hat....?. They are just old cowboy hats off Kijiji. One I have is a Stetson. Two no name from a small town general store that closed decades ago. I think the two were made by Beaver brand hats. Go back to the 60's and 70;s cowboy hats had a 3"-3 1/2" brim not the typical 4" they have now. Only thing you may find difficult is finding a black one. Never came across an old one that was black. Natural, beige, brown, silver but no black.
