Picked this suit up at the local thrift shop. It is beautiful and in excellent condition. It is hard for me to think it is as old as it seems to be due to the condition. It is custom tailored, so I have no way of telling how old it is. I can guess from the style it is from the thirties maybe, but I am guessing maybe forties or fifties from europe. The style seems to be european which I don't really know.

It is a dark blue, almost purple and almost black. It has an unusual style in that it is a four button, but it buttons really high, and almost seems like it would have an additional button closure lower, but it doesn't. The shoulders are a bit snug as it is cut a little snug on top and the arm holes are pretty high. The pant's have a reverse pleat and other beautiful details. I am almost tempted to keep just the pants even though the jacket is snug, but I don't want to break up such a beautiful suit. It is kind of a hollywood waist, with no separate waistband. The belt loops are really thin, but not especially narrow as far as the belt size. It only has one back pocket with a flap. The waist also has a chinch on each hip. The inside has some kind of snap loop. For underwear maybe? THe suspender buttons are that old looking kind. They say L. W. The back suspenders button is on a two inch long strip made of the same pants fabric. The fly is button. The pants are about 22 inches at the cuff. They kind of taper to the knee, then straight down. The inside of the jacket has two identical pockets, one on each side, done in the way that is common in tailored suits, but not in factory made american vintage. See the picture. . The inside lining of the sleeves seems to be maybe linen, in a striped off white fabric. The rest of the lining is blue in a fabric that is slightly shiny, but not quite like the satiny fabric you find in american vintage suits. The inside of the pockets is lined with white canvassy material a little stiffer than what you find in a typical american vintag suit.

The cuffs have three buttons that are slightly convex and they are kind of shiny like a plastic maybe. the front buttons are the same, but bigger.

The tailoring is just exquisite. This was obviously a fine suit.

It is too late tonight, but I am posting it for sale tomorrow or soon. It is about a 37.

Any help would be appreciated. I know American suits pretty well, but this one needs the eye of some of the experts.

My gosh, that looks like my German suit in many ways! What a swell suit!

I would guess that suit is late 40's could be early 50's... German tailors from my understanding were some of the finest in Europe... they were obsessed with details and also most of their post-war suits reflected earlier styles; could very well be late due to it being made in post war Germany... if it's not German, we'll just say it's European without a doubt!

No matter what the period it's from, it's beautiful! Enjoy it and wear it with pride!

i agree. definately European and probably German. most of the trouser features point to this: the scalloped pocket flap, the pointed waist band flap, the brace extenders, the double jetted front pockets.

Not British - two inside pockets would be unusual to say the least. This feature was not common until the 1960s - later rather than earlier for RTW.

The only exception might be a well travelled Briton.
