Anyone here ever purchase a hat from a Hasidic jew?
I have been reading up on there religion and there clothing, the hats look very well made.

I am in the process now of purchasing a couple fedoras that were made in Hungary by Milano. for a Hasidic jew.
Any members here have any information on the quality of these Milano brand hats made in Hungary.?

Best regards

I can offer that Milano brand hats made in the good ol' U.S. of A. (Garland, Texas, to be specific) are among the finest production hats of which I am aware. To the best of my knowledge, though, all the Milano brand hats made in this country are Westerns, aka "cowboy hats." I've seen evidence that Milano uses Fepsa bodies, made in Portugal.

I've never purchased a hat from a Hasid (not that I'm aware of, anyway), but I've sold a few to Hasidim -- black hats, of course. What little I've read on the subject indicates that items of attire, including hats, vary among the Hasidim, depending on which spiritual leaders they follow, but those differences would be lost on people who didn't make a fairly close study of it. In other words, people who weren't of those communities probably wouldn't pay those distinctions no nevermind.

Fedoras are big among Lubavitcher Hasids, while other dynasties prefer other types of hats. I have a couple BBFs (big, black fedoras!) from different hat makers, and they're high-quality production hats, beyond any doubt.

If you have questions about Hassidus, feel free to PM me, CCJ. :)

Check with BenCraft Hatters. They are a sponsor here. I bought a nice Stetson from their Williamsburg, Brooklyn, store a few years ago, and was treated to the charming scene of a young Hasidic lad, maybe 17, choosing his first big hat. He had his dad and good buddy with him, and he was hilariously indecisive about the whole thing. His dad was philosophical and patient about it, but the pal just wanted him to decide already! He wound up with a very fine, VERY tall crowned and wide brimmed hat. Don't know what make, but it was a nice hat. The salesman told me that about 60% of their business is from local Hasidim, and the rest from Gentiles.

I bought a black Borsalino Trionfo hat on E Bay. When it arrived, it was clear that it was a Hasidic type hat, overwide brim and all. I would've looked like a Hasidim if I wore it. So I told the seller it wasn't my size, and he graciously took it back. Point being that those hats appear quite specific to the Hasidic group, and I'm afraid there isn't any dual use of the hats in a normal style sense. I like the way the Hasidim look in their hats, but they are too ethnic-specific for me to go there.

So, here I am in my black hat, pre-shift:

Same hat, different angle, wardrobe change:

You tell me: am I too ethnic in the second picture? :)

If the first photo is upside down, I quit. I've spent 20 minutes trying to fix it in photobucket.
