Hats on liquidation - Astoria Queens NYC

A menswear store in Astoria Queens NY is having a (real) going out of business sale. They have a hat dept. where everything is currently 50% off. There are about 50 hats, Stetsons, Stefano, etc., about 1/3 dress, 1/3 straw, 1/3 rain hats. There is also an old bench mount hat stretcher with non-functional heating element, but apparently someone has dibs on it (Feraud, is that you?). Here are the particulars:

There are suits and shirts, etc. too, but nothing too special. If you're in the city, it may be worth a look for a low price lid. By subway:

N or W to 'Broadway' stop in Queens, walk 1 block east.

R (or V weekdays) to 'Steinway' stop in Queens, walk north to Broadway, turn left and walk west about 7 blocks.

What a shame.. I remember when Raleigh's was double the size at it's present location.

Cardelo is correct there is a major and legitimate liquidation sale going on. A really good opportunity to get name brand fedoras. The location is extrememly easy to get to.

I wish I had dibs on the stretcher.

No website, no large hats

This is strictly an old-school operation - there is no website listed on their business card. I forgot to mention before, there aren't any extra large hats. There was a nice brown fedora and a pork pie in size 7-1/2, but nothing to fit my 7-3/4 head. I've never managed to buy a hat there in all the years I've lived in the neighborhood. And Feraud makes a good point - the store is a 15 minute, pleasant subway ride from midtown, plus the N and W line is elevated in Astoria, which is nice.

I went this evening based on the recommendation of this thread.

I don't recommend anyone travel very far to reach this store. Their stock of hats is now quite picked over -- just a few left, none were anywhere near my size, and all looked pretty low-end.

Oh, no worries. It was worth checking out, just in case. I was in Queens for the Mets game, so all it meant was a couple of subway transfers.

Wow, struck out on hats and watching the Mets lose the home-opener on the same day, what a bummer. Yet another reason to tear down Shea Stadium (not that we need another reason)

No I am not a modernist, aching to tear down anything old. But I've frozen my butt off in lousy seats at Shea enough to dislike it forever. Shea is a bad stadium because it was designed badly, not because it's old - it's not even that old, really. Having been to new parks in Seattle and Atlanta, I think it's true that these parks have more in common with the really nice old parks like Wrigley than with a toilet bowl like Shea.

I do hate the modern urge to sell stadium naming rights to corporations - but hey, Wrigley is a brand of gum, isn't it? Seriously, some old things are nice and should be maintained (1937 Lincoln Zephyr, an art deco masterpiece with a 12-cylinder aluminum block engine), but some are not and just need to be replaced (my 1978 Mercury Zephyr).
