The hat type that is most popular today is without a doubt the snap brim fedora. However, when looking at Esquire illustrations, I realized that there were many other popular hat types, which have mostly dissapeared today. Take for example two hats that I like very much, and I can't find them anywhere today: the Cavalier hat and the Lord's hat. They can be seen in Marc Chevalier's post here:http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=10602&page=2

It it said that the Lord's hat is correct for business, semi-formal day and evening wear, and the Cavalier hat is correct for town, semi-sports and travel.

The Cavalier hat seems like it's merely a standard fedora with it's brim pushed around a bit. You could probably make any decent quality fedora look like that fairly easy, I would guess. As for the Lord's,that almost has a bit of the Homburg quality to it. Nice hat, very business formal to my eye.
