Hats for starters

Good day, everybody!

I have a question: As I said in my "initiation thread" I have been interested in the Golden Era for quite a while but am just starting out getting serious. Now I want to buy my first hat. I have never worn a hat before, so I have no clue how that would look on me. Should I get myself a fairly cheap one (about $50) and just try whether I like what I see or should I save the money and wait for the time to by me a real hat?

Jens- go to a few mens' shops which sell hats- try one or two on, look in the mirror, see what you think... You don't need to spend any money to try one on and see. There are some basic guidelines to crown and brim sizes versus your face shape as far as "visual balance" is concerned but you can wear what you want. Rounder, wider faces can generally get away with a taller crown and wider brim than a thin face can...

Have you looked online for a shop/retailer near you? I'm lucky - I'm close enough to New York city to drive in or take the train. In fact, I just did recently, and, well... check out my avatar for what I found!

What is the "hat community" like in Germany? I can picture folks there as being a bit more "old school", and hats are being more common. Or is it just me? C'mon, Jens, give us the skinny! :)

Hi!

Yes, the hat community in Germany is rather strange. Mostly guys 60+ wearing really ugly hats. Fedoras and the like are really rare. As I stated in another post recently, I live in Berlin, a city of 3.6 million people and tens of thousands of tourists, and throughout the entire weekend I spotted maybe 20 decent fedoras, and all on guys 50+. I was the only guys under 30 wearing a hat...

I found a hat now. It is not the best quality, but was enough to get me hooked :) Which means that I went out just this week and got myself a decent panama, really good quality and a beauty, too...

You'll do yourself a disservice if you don't check out Akubra's hats. They're moderately priced and an excellent value for the money. They offer a variety of styles and will also last for many years. While not a premium line, Akubra is a solid, respected brand. There are several online retailers for this brand. Just do a web search and you'll find them. Still, visiting a real hat shop would be the best, first step. Don't buy anything made of wool. Don't let anyone discourage you from wearing whatever you buy.
