I'd love to elicit the help of FLers on my DH's behalf. He just got a 1940's vintage suit, that is navy blue with a great bright, almost electric blue pinstripe. He only has two vintage hats and two vintage suits so far. The other hat is brown and the suit is red/brown weave.

This second hat is med. gray with a wide navy band. Can this go with this navy pinstripe suit?? He got the hat based on first choosing a lighter blue with lt gray pinstripe vintage suit, but it would have required many $$ on alterations. So he exchanged it with the vintage dealer for navy pinstripe he has now which fits perfect (really his first choice anyway).

I can take a pic of the hat laid on the suit jacket and post it here if that would be helpful...

Hi,

A pic would be welcome, but, in principle, what you present looks correct. A grey hat goes well with a navy suit, and the blue ribbon will connect with the blues in the suit.

Unless these blues are of very differing (clashing) tones, the combo should work.

thanks BaronK...

He's got one pair of vintage brown shoes, they are the color and style that go with his WWII Army Air Corp Captain's uniform. The brown fedora he has is matches his red/brown DB suit nicely.;

The outdoor pic seals it. That works quite well. You might suggest a nice brown pair of shoes and the brown hat.

Hello,

There is no reason not to wear either hat with either suit based on your description. All these items are meant to be worn with a variety of other items of dress. Looking at the old pictures which are provided on this site will show a huge range of combination that might not at first occur to one as being appropriate but which are very stylish and traditional. Some things are in one's own style and others, equally appropriate, may not be. There is a certain amount of play, such as play in which children engage, in the selection of dress by which which one chooses to greet the situation of each day's activity.

Regards to you and to your husband.

Rudy
