Hat Check Girl...

After watching lots of old movies, I've always wondered something: when men would come into a social nightclub and hand their hat to the hat check girl, they never got a claim ticket or any means of identifying their hats. How was this generally done? And where or how did they store all those hats??? Just wondering...--Etienne

HAT CHECK X

I' m sure back in the 1940's you were probably given a chit
when turning in your coat/hat to the hat check girl (;) ) when
entering a real club.

Earlier this year in NYC had to check my fedora at a restaurant.
Fortunately I was the only guy wearing a hat, so no problem
however I prefer the hat closer to me!

SC

When you go to the coat check they give you a ticket. In higher quality restaurants in town they still have hat racks, curved shelves above the coat hangers. Curved to allow for the natural curve of a hat brim. The hangers have tabs of paper with three corresponding numbers. They rip off the end and give you the stub. Take the middle number and stick it in the band of the hat and leave the third of the hanger with your coat. Another way I have seen is a shelving unit divided into squares. Each square is numbered so that number is written on the tag on the hanger so they know what hat goes with each jacket. Most of the time they don’t bother as I am usually the only person wearing a hat.
