This is ignorant, but its a well-meaning ignorance :) what does Pentacost Sunday involve, in terms of observance/celebration?

Happy holidays, everyone!

Pentacost Sunday comes from and old Testment celibration that was 50 days past Passover and considered an early harvest celibration. In the New Testament it has to do with on that same day of celibration in Christ's time the blessing of the Holy Spirit decending apon the Apostles. From that, they receive a clarified understanding of the Salvation message and the ability to spread that message thru the whole world. So the holiday goes from being one type of harvest message to another "Harvest" message. It is tied to the promises and fulfilment of promises given by God regarding Salvation .

IT'S A GOOD THING.

Shavuot?

I approve of any holiday where tradition demands the consumption of dairy desserts.

Shavuot is 7 weeks after Pesach. (I looked it up!). That was this past Wednesday. And, yes, DAIRY RULES!

Seven weeks = 50 days. (OK, technically 49)
Pentecost = 50 days (the word means that, as well.)

The Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles giving them the Fortitude and other gifts to leave the Upper Room and take the Gospel to the world.

Having had a great aunt who was a Pentacostal missionary in Japan for 60 years, (see my thread in WWII :A letter from Tokyo), I'm curious how this group got the name Pentacostal. I know they have a tradition of "Speaking in tongues". Is that related?

Yes..for them it is. Many have the belief that speaking in tongues is the utterance or acknowlegement of being filled with the Holy Spirit. Claiming that is what happened on the day of Pentecost....thus..Pentecostals.:)
