Yes, definately,.....

......something substantial. I use old hangers that came with suits I had bought in the past,..........hmm, I just took a glance in my closet and all 4 of my leather jackets are in front on 4 wooden hangers. The ONLY wooden hangers I can see from the doorway. Wood is definately good. :)

Don't open that closet McGee!

Old suit hangers really help the jacket to drape right and retaind the correct shape. Sometimes at Target or Walmat you can find replacement hangers. If they only have the plastic type for suits you probably could wrap the hanger with some cloth to help the jacket breathe.

Also if you are in a high humidity area there are closet de-humidifiers and chem packs to keep the mold and mildew away.

Sheer ignorance led me to turn on my A/C about a month later than usual, last Spring. This after 10 years down here... Not to save $ but thought I was tougher than nails...

MY SHOES! MY BOOTS! MY JACKETS! OY YOY YOY!!!

Most salvaged but a few things ruined, ruined! :deadhorse

Humidity problems!

Back when I was a teen, my brother and I shared a big bedroom that was the finished attic in my parents house, The summer had been both warm and very humid. The entire floor at that time was those vinyl tiles one foot square and they were also in the floor of the closets. I think my brother went away for a vacation and for a week his closet was not opened. When he got back and opened the closet a pair of all leather shoes had been cover in mold or mildew what ever. The closet reeked! :( We put the shoes into a bag and tossed them. Mom laundered all the clothes that hung in there and sprayed the interior down with clorox.

In spite of the clorox and cleaning the floor tiles in that closet have the shape of a pair of shoes permenantly stained into the vinyl.

Anyway I was impressed at the power of spores, molds, and fugus!

Hi, Kenny,

For long term storage it is best to lay the jacket flat and zipped up in a drawer wide enough for the jacket to fit without wrinkling. To this add a couple of pieces of unfinished cedar strips about a foot long by 2" wide and 1/4" thick for moth repellant.

If you're going to use a hangar get a good wooden suit jacket type - along the sloped parts add a two inch piece of pipe foam - the plumbers type to insulate pipes. Over this double a thick white cotton towel - this will give a shape for the jacket to take and is very cheap. The white cotton will not stain the lining.

Also add the cedar strip for moth prevention.

I found wood "wishbone" style suit hangers at The Container Store that spread out to about 2 inches wide at the ends to support the shoulders. They're about 12 bucks a piece, a small investment considering that I'm hanging a $500+ jacket on it.

Cheers!

Or for that broken in look, you could just ball it up and stick it in the corner of the closest. :p ......Jake
