Hand creasing my light weight felt

I set about giving a hand crease to my new light weight felt today.

I had managed a sucessful tear drop on my last few standard weights, and thought I`d try to get a tear drop on my new lightweight felt.

First step - determining the front and rear heights

Next step wa trying to get a smooth `C` part of the back. Liberal amounts of steam were used. I used my thumb for smoothing the back...

Liberal amounts of steam again, and this time tried to smooth out the sides towards the back...this resulted in pressuring the felt downwards in a circular motion...

Next step was to try and push up the middle to see what it would look like...

This resulted in wrinkled edges at the back, so back to smoothing with the thumb along the `C` and back parts of the fold...

As the wrinkles were not coming out, I decided to push them out from underneath...again, liberal amounts of steam were used...

This was starting to give an original dent, but I decided it was time to spray distilled water over the top, and gently try and mold the shape that the felt was giving me...

Finally, having got the wrinkles out the back, and an original dent, I`m busy fine tuning the shape and balance...

fftopic: I think this has been covered before (if someone can point me to the thread I'd appreciate it) but when did the word Bash/ing became associated with styling a hat?, doesn't it literaly mean--among other things-- to hit something with a crushing/smashing blow?[huh] needless to say that I dislike the association.

I never heard it either before seeing this forum, but I gather it's a standard "hat community" term for shaping. I guess it must be used because the word is more colorful than to say shaping, and it's more fun to use colorful words for things.

Great hat daizawaguy and fantastic job with the BASH. Everyone knows what you mean when you say bash or crease. Its OK.

I admit I don't really have any issues with the term BASH either. It rolls off the tongue more than crease, or crown-shape. People who don't know me, or hats, look at me weird when I start talking about my hat bashes, but that's all part of the fun.

I prefer to CREASE or HAND BLOCK at hat. BASHING seems so negative.

Thanks GT. That was the terms I was looking for. I didn`t want to give in under the pressure , but as this thread may be a record for the future (and links to Google etc) , I thought I`d correct the title. Thanks for the support on the "bash" term nontheless guys, and thanks for pointing it out.
