With Memorial Day having just passed, I wanted to post this link. This was on PBS on Monday and I had recorded it and just got to watch it this morning. It brings the 40's into focus.

I studied in England in the late 70s and got a chance to visit the American Cemetery at Cambridge. It is mainly fliers. It was a very moving place.

I visited a Graveyard on Texel Island in Holland years ago. My Brother-in-law showed me where they buried Georgian Soldiers. These Russian were conscripted to fight in one of the "Ost" battalions. When the war was going badly for the Germans the Georgians rebelled. The Germans proceeded to mop the Island up from one end to another. Most of the Russians were wiped out. My Brother-in-law is fortunately a Military Historian and does alot of digging around. He has recovered alot of 8mm brass and other shells. He was asked this past May to place a wreath on some Fliers grave. He was asked by some American and Brit aviators to do so. Apparently these Veterans are getting up in age. Texel is also strewn with alot of Aircraft wreckage. This last trip I saw a Prop erected as a shrine on Texel. It wasn't a Hamilton Standard or Curtiss electric so it came off a British Bomber. Lots of History there.
