An older gentleman, mid 70s, came in to my store today with a fedora on. I just had to stop him and complement him. Frist thing out of his mouth was "Yeah I know I look like Indiana Jones." then he rolled his eyes. I told him I was thinking Bogart. You should have seen his eyes light up. He told me he picked the hat up at estate sale. Truely a fine looking vintage lid.

Nothing beats a spontaneous hat compliment. Frankly, my favorites come from middle aged men of color. They seem to Get It most often - that dignified flash a hat can give - and they react with warm admiration.

Younger people react a little more as if you're in costume, which can deflate one's self confidence a tad.

My wife and I had lunch at a diner in NYC. On the way out I noticed a businessman sitting at the counter wearing a fedora.
I gave him a compliment on his hat and he looked uninterested.
He probably did not know what I meant by "fedora"..

Might be. Also, as you must know, NYers don't necessarily respond readily to niceties from strangers.

It's strange that this happened to you today, for I had the same exact experience.
I was at the pharmacy, and an older gentleman walked in wearing a beautiful overcoat and brown fedora. I approached him to compliment him on his hat and coat, and he was so shocked. I told him about my fascination/addiction with vintage, and that my roommate was a hat collector. He was so surprised that there was actually someone of my age who wore hats. Turned out he was born in the early 30's, and has always worn a fedora. He was such a nice man, and told me how he really missed how people, in particular, women:) dressed. The hat he was wearing was a new one, just purchase in Rome this past October. He did tell me that he still has his and his fathers hats from the 30's through the 50's, and wears one everyday. His face really brightened up from my compliments, and he was so glad to hear that people still appreciate the era that he loves so much.

After the pharmacy, I went to get a coffee. In the coffee shop was another man wearing a vintage fed. I approached him too, I figured I was on a roll. Turns out his hat was from the 60's, but he has a collection from many eras. I told him about the lounge, and he too was amazed that there are other people out there with a fascination for vintage.

Sometimes I feel like I'm a vintage recruiter. I guess I feel like if I tell more people about vintage and the lounge, maybe the world will be better dressed:)

You never know. I went through the line at a Chipotle today wearing a wool overcoat and a Whippet, and the gent at the cash register (@30 years old) said "Man, you're looking sharp today." Easy to guess why - but it sure does give one a lift.

We need to share these comliments with others, as many of you do.

There is this old cat in my nebighorhood that wears a topper and no shirt while mowing the lawn. I always try to give him a wave as I breeze past on my way to work. I guess mowing is a good enough reason as any these days to wear a top hat.

I saw a man today, about 45, long coat, dark brown suit, fedora, scarf, even gloves. He was looking sharp.

I wanted to stop him and say "I hope my future husband dresses like you." But that would have been creepy. So I guess he had to settle for my goofy big ole' smile. :)

I saw a really well-dressed student outside of my lecture hall today. No hat, but he was wearing an excellent dark camel-colored pea coat with all these lovely details, a teal wool scarf tucked in, nice slacks and some dress shoes. He couldn't have been more than 23 or 24. I kept staring at him until he walked away, but he was by far the best dressed person I've seen at UCLA since I've started going to school here!
