I was walking my dog down Second Avenue yesterday afternoon when a strong gust of wind blew my hat off my head and into moving traffic. It was moving quick. It made it through the first two lanes safely but was mowed down by a truck in the third. A man across the street was kind enough to grab it for me before more damage was inflicted.
Naturally, I feared the worst. When I retrieved the hat, a brown 1940's Pilgrim, it was half-mashed and had a faint tire tread across it. I was very surprised to find that it snapped back into near perfect shape with a slight nudge. In fact I was astounded.
The hat was already a beater so the tire tread is really no big deal to me, but I wonder how a modern fedora would fare after being run over by a truck.
