Golden Era Film Lids - Ronald Coleman UPDATE!!!

Hey all,

WildRoot inspired me to throw together a series of golden era silver screen hat pics from some golden era films. No cliches here! No Indiana Joneses, no Casablancas, no Maltese Falcons. I'm going deeper into the famous films with the more obscure lids that, even though they are being worn by the movie stars, aren't remembered...OK, OK, I threw in one Bogart for you guys!

FIRST UP: Gregory Peck in SPELLBOUND

Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant

I love Jimmy Stewart's hat in "The Man Who Knew Too Much" or even "Vertigo". Even that old cowboy hat he wore in most of his Westerns was too cool. He's a guy who knew how to make a hat look good! Do you remember the scene in "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" where he's talking to a pretty girl and the camera is on his hat which is in his hand? You hear the dialogue but all you see is how he nervously fiddles with his hat, dropping it several times. It's a wonderful scene but shows how comfortable Jimmy was with his hats.

Now Cary Grant's a different story. IMO he did not have a good hat sense. My wife and I are big fans of old movies, especially Cary's. I've got to say that I never thought he looked good in any of the hats he wore in his movies. Check out the "Philadelphia Story", "Bringing Up Baby", "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House" and so on. The thing about them is that that they all look similar so I figure that he was picking them.

On the other hand Jimmy Stewart's hat in the "Philadelphia Story" was nice.

Alrighty - thanks for the comments. Up this afternoon will be a Jimmy Stewart slew as per your requests! Watch for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, The Philadelphia Story, AND Vertigo!

I will also snatch up "This Gun For Hire" for you and get those up next week, howsaboutit?

Oh, where'd I get the pics? I made them from my 400+ DVD collection using a computer program I have that can "snatch" paused stills from the DVD.

Speaking of which, if anyone wants a special still to make an avatar out of, PM me a request and I'll e-mail you the still.

I love the profile of that Gregory Peck hat! :clap :clap The rake from front to back is outstanding. I like the front pinch as well. Definitely something you don't see every day now.
The pinch on Joel McCrea's hat is too much. It goes clear down into the ribbon! That hat probably has a hole in it at the front for sure. :p

Regards to all,

I forgot to mention a film that has a great hybrid hat in it. British Intelligence (1940) with Boris Karloff and Margaret Lindsay is a great hat film. Every actor wears one. A unique hat is worn by one of the police officials. It is a homburg with a fedora block. Quite an interesting hat. You wouldn't happen to have that film on DVD would you MD? I would love to see a still of that hat.

Regards to all,

J

I tired to post some of Robert Mitchum in one thread where we were discussing Mitchum blocks or something, but was unable to do so. He looked pretty good in fedoras.

Do you have some Mitchum photos?

I just watched Fred Astaire in 'A Royal Wedding', and really liked his fedora in that film. It's been a while since I've seen it too. Lots of nice lids there. Regards. Michaelson
