I came accross with a collection of window signs used in an old Italian hats shop.
These two are for Austrian hats and will make my friend Steve happy

Dermotta Vienna, note the Italian translation of the name of the Austrian capital, is in gold-plated tin with black writing. The measures are: 20x6.5 cm

Fraenkel Wien is made of glass with black and red lettering inside the glass
The measures are 33x10.5 cm. On the back there is an Italian 1 Lira stamp with an effigy of the King of Italy and a date of 2 May 1931

Rheinhut Superior "Wildleder", 59cm probably mid to later 1950s. The felt color, finish and hand are fantastic. It's a sporty mix of Dress and Trachten Hat styles. Rheinische Hutfabrik was located in Neersen, Germany which is close by Düsseldorf.

The shop "A. Keudel" in Hagen that sold the hat was originally a hat factory. (1902)

Great find, Steve. The German hatfactories did these Wildleders so well. I like the styling of this as well; nice to see something a bit different.

There's no real reason why I should post this hat here, except that almost all of my chamois, antilope or wildleder finished hats are of German manufacture. And they did make an awful lot of hats under a wide variety of brand names. This one I picked up yesterday as a replacement for a Peschel I sold recently that was slightly too big for me (and didn't get any wear because of that). It's not a complete match but it comes close enough and it does fit me better. Diana antilope, size 56 in brown. Bound brim at 6,5 cm and crown 10 cm at the pinch. No label inside the hat. My guess would be late fifties to mid sixties.

Mike, thanks. The felt is lovely, the felt pen on the liner less so. I have not tried everything yet, but so far no luck removing it. There's probably a reason why they're called permanent markers.

Steve, thanks. I'm glad the Peschel fits you better than it did me. It's like that when buying hats sometimes. You get too exited finding a really special one you don't pay enough attention to fit or other details. I have a herd of these antilopes, but there's always room for more.

Because it's sunday. Another find of last friday. This one caught my eye and didn't let go of it. I left a Flechet longer haired velour behind to bring this one along (the Flechet had a nicer shape, but wasn't in good condition with mothing in prominent places). The brim is on the short side for my taste (I know Mike @Redfokker says to embrace the stingy, but to me they still feel like a hat that needs to grow up a little). This one does have redeeming qualities in spades though. It's a velour, in great condition and a wonderful warm brown colour. Elegant in brown, size 56. Bound brim at 5cm and crown 10cm at the pinch. No labels at all inside the hat (so it may have something to hide). The felt reminds me of an Esko velour hat I have, so my best guess is it's German (they usually are). It's pictured without pinch, but I have put those in now.

Steve, Mike, thanks. I'm not a fan of stingy brims but I must admit it all depends on the hat. I tried this one with the brim snapped down and it immediately became a little hat. I like it much better the way it is now. Lovely as the felt is, I don't see myself wearing it very often. Still a nice petting hat though.

Steve, thanks. It's hard to see. As far as I can tell it's Sh32, but the S and the 2 at the beginning and end may well be just ornamental, because they don't look to be complete letter/numbers. It could be just "h3" therefore.

This one is another find from last week, but I haven't posted it before. It's on its way to the US as we post. Hückel fedora in grey (grau). Size 58 with the brim at 5,5cm and the crown at 11cm at the pinch. It's a Hückel Welheim one with a really nice ribbon and bow treatment. No label inside the hat, but there is writing on the inside sweatband.

 

[65 Classic]

Emanuel Gittel Wien, 58cm probably early 1960s. This is my first Emanuel Gittel Wien find. The hat is well made and the machine form and dimensions are of the time period. I don't have any information on the company other than a listing in the Austrian Hat Industry Guide (1926) .

Natural Light

Nice hat. The brim ribbon reminds me of the Mayser hats.
