G-1 collar

What's underneath the G-1 fur collar? A single layer of leather? Is there a way of replacing the fur with leather? Or is fur the way to go, and where could one get the fur? I've asked Amanda way too many favors, don't want to go there... The G-1 in question is my son's, the much maligned cow hide version from the 70s, he is not fussy about it.

I like the G1, but prefer the collar of the A2. Gibson & Barnes makes a "Raider" and an F85 jacket which combines the G1 articulated back and sleeves with an A2 collar.
I'm sure a competent tailor could put a conventional collar on your sons jacket.

i have the cockpit g1 vintage goatskin jacket. i like the fur collar it is nice and small and goes well with the look of the g1 jacket.

I wouldn't do it...but it can be done. I've had old, ratty G-1 collars repaced with new mouton. There's no reason that goatskin couldn't have been used, instead. But finding leather that matched the jacket would be the main issue, I would think.

I agree with AF on the matching of the leather. However, I would replace the mouton collar. There are several places that wil do it for you. I have even seen active duty pilots replace it with mink. I am not a big fan of the look, but I have seen it.

hello my friend has a g1 jacket with the fur collar he was to try to take it off. how is the fur collar put on do they clue it on. if so do think it will come off easy or leave a mess lol thanks

Hello, I bought some Mouton fur from fur source .com, not too expensive. I asked for a custom size larger, just so I would have something to work with. Since I am not a tailor, I did it myself and It came out pretty good. But I also remember having one of my other jackets fur collar repaired at a local cleaners that had leather repair. not too expensive either..

My friend bought a G-1 and had the black mouton collar replaced with the honey color collar which he liked better.

I have a G-1 D-series, goatskin, later one with Dynal collar. I got some sheepskin to have the collar replaced. Before sending it to the shop, I disassembled it myself out of curiosity. Here is what it looks like:

To remove the "fur" part of the collar all 3 base stitching rows need to be removed so even the top one. So likely not possible to keep the collar leather part attached.
I'm thinking on adapting another G-1 jacket by adding a MA-1 style collar or an A-1 collar. I think that would make it more versatile/practical.

By doubling the collar with a another leather panel on the inside would allow to have a G-1 leather collar only.
